The second phase of exchanging prisoners against Israeli soldier Gilaad Shalit that took place on the 18th of January was a set back from the previous exchange that happened simultaneously with the release of Shalit on the 18th of October and consisted- under Egyptian patronage- in the release of more than 440 prisoners of different organizations and the release of all children and women with some restriction imposed on the place of residence of some .
Besides targeting the families who were waiting outside for release of their children throwing at them with stun grenades , the Israelis chose to release prisoners whose terms were soon ending. This way from the 550 released prisoners 90 prisoners had their incarceration term end within one week which is a real trick played on HAMAS from the Egyptians and the Israelis. Not only this but- as it was revealed later- 70% of the prisoners were close to be released within one week to one year from their actual release .
So the release of prisoners did not include those who had long time sentences since 400 among the released ones had served 2/3 of their term sentence , in addition to the fact that the exchange did not include any prisoner from HAMAS or the Jihad . Why this happened we don’t know but these are the terms of the second part of the exchange operation that happened under the patronage of the Egyptian Intelligence in which the Israelis were free to decide who was to be released. The exchange that was a big disappointment included mostly prisoners from the Fateh (around 300 hundred ) and from other PLO factions .
The remarkable thing is that one of the released prisoners had his sentence end the same day he was released . Many people hold HAMAS responsible for this fiasco whose great mistake was to let Israel decide the conditions of the second phase of the release depriving thousands of Palestinians who are suffering in the Israeli prisons from the opportunity to take advantage of the exchange operation
Why this neglect on behalf of HAMAS of a crucial matter and why accept that this exchange that was a unique opportunity takes place in two separate times ? We did not know that it would be left to Israel to decide whom to release among prisoners of the second phase .Did HAMAS leave the whole package in the hands of Egyptians and Israelis and against what? Was the price the reconciliation with the Palestinian authority? Has HAMAS entered the dangerous phase of compromising with Israel?
