Bishop tried for allegedly denying Holocaust
BERLIN – Ultraconservative British Bishop Richard Williamson is being tried in a German court for allegedly denying the Holocaust.
Proceedings opened Friday in a Regensburg local court against the 70-year-old bishop. Williamson had said in a TV interview recorded in Germany in 2008 he did not believe the Nazis had gas chambers to kill Jews and others.
Denying the Holocaust is a criminal offense in Germany. Last year the court issued Williamson an order of punishment and a fine that he refused to accept, forcing the trial.
The bishop, a member of the ultraconservative Society of St. Pius X, did not appear in court Friday, the DAPD news agency reported. Williamson’s order has forbidden him to appear in court or make public statements.
