Shortly after 3 p.m. on Friday, various members of the “hactivist collective” Anonymous posted on Twitter under #OpIsrael, that they had hacked Israel’s government website, Mossad, as well as several relatedsites. Mossad was not available for about a half an hour, but other government departments could not be accessed throughout the evening, including Israel Trade, Police, Justice and Immigration.
The first claim that the attack had been successful was posted onTwitter by @YourAnonNews who tweeted: Anon News Israel site hack tweet Anonymous also claimed to have obtained – and released online – the personal information of 35,000 government officials, military (IDF),police officers and politicians. It appeared on Friday that only one English language outlet mentioned the shut-down of the website. The Hackers Post reported: The Official Website of National Intelligence Agency of Israel (www.mossad.gov.il) – Mossad Down by #Sektor404 and 30K Agents Info leaked by Anonymous, RedHack and PLF under the operation called #OpIsrael.
Israel government website The tech site Softpedia.com issued a report on Saturday morning. Digital Journal reported last week that Anonymous is planning to launch a coordinated #OpIsrael cyber-attack on numerous Israeli websites, but not until April 7, threatening to “erase Israel from the Internet.” There may be more Anonymous on the horizon. On Friday, this announcement was posted by Al Jazeera English: A branch of the hacktivist collective Anonymous, @YourAnonNews (YAN),announced on Wednesday that it plans to start its own publicly funded news site. The move will allow the account to operate without the restrictions of companies like Twitter and Tumblr, where it is currently hosted. YAN plans to fund the project entirely through crowd-sourcing and donated services. Days after the announcement, designers and programmers came forward to contribute. Your Anon News made the announcement two days prior via Twitter.
The list of 36,000 Israeli Mossad and govt officials is listed here and elsewhere on the internet.
