It was interesting news of Kamala Harris going to the Munich conference, where she will be treated courteously but will be way in over her head. The flip side to that is the Russian delegation is not attending, its first absence in a decade.
It is also the 15th anniversary of Putin’s address opposing the expansion of NATO as destabilizing the peace, which of course is true, and why NATO is doing it. It keeps the war machines and the industries permanently employed for decades, until the next and maybe the last war.
“NATO expansion does not have any relation with the modernization of the Alliance itself,” Putin said in the combative 2007 address. “On the contrary, it represents a serious provocation that reduces the level of mutual trust.”
We are hearing the same worn out drivel from Biden about how strong the US reaction will be, with no historical mention of how, if the US had not backed the Kiev coup, we would not be facing this situation.
Once again we find even senior leaders who were there at the time, airbrushing their own participation in what has led to the current standoff. Western leaders have a very selective memory, whereas the Russians remember everything, and for good reason.
As for Macron, he is milking the crisis as part of his reelection campaign presenting himself as the great world leader, the same old bullshit which is to be expected in such times. As for Putin, I think he is a closet Who fan.
He knows drifting along with the status quo is heading in only one direction where all can be lost, so risks must be taken to change that dynamic.
