The Russian opposition leader was shot and killed in late February by assailants in a passing vehicle.
The Russian Federal Security Service announced Saturday that two suspects have been detained in connection to the murder of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov.
“I would like to inform you that the work that has been conducted has resulted in two suspects in this crime being detained today. They are a Gubashev, Anzor and a Dadayev, Zaur,” stated FSS head Alexander Bortnikov in a video posted online.
RT reported that Bortnikov said that the suspects were both from the Caucasus.
Bortnikov told Channel One that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been informed of the detention and that the investigation was ongoing. Putin had promised there would be a thorough investigation into the murder
Nemtsov, 55, served as deputy prime minister under Boris Yeltsin and was a well-known opposition figure in Russia.
He was shot dead near the Kremlin on the night of Feb. 27 two days ahead of a rally he had helped organize.
Critics of President Putin have alleged that his government played a role in the death of Nemtsov. The Russian president has vehemently denied having any role in the murder.
A spokesperson for Putin said that the murder of Nemtsov appeared to be a contract killing and could have been done as an act of provocation.
