Nigel Farage’s new outfit, The Brexit Party, comfortably won the European Elections in May, setting off a political earthquake. They have dropped off the news agenda since the elevation of Boris Johnson to Prime Minister, but The Brexit Party surge in the polls shows no sign of being a flash in the pan. Their role could be significant in a looming General Election, and it is possible that the party could have MPs in the next parliament.
There’s many reasons to be concerned about Farage’s new project, not least its far-right ties and members’ own extreme actions. In March 2019 an exposé by my colleague David Lawrence of then-leader Catherine Blaiklock’s racist social media activity led to her resignation and our subsequent investigations have revealed numerous concerning connections.
Alongside the British far right, these include a range of North American links, from the crank factory that is InfoWars to individual alt-light conspiracy theorists like Mike Cernovich and Jack Posobiec, and from alt-right figures like Stefan Molyneux and Faith Goldy to leading manosphere figure Paul Elam. Farage himself, we’ve learnt, has even appeared in a Bilderberg conspiracy documentary alongside figures from the LaRouche Movement, whose ideology has been described by journalist and researcher Chip Berlet as “fascism wrapped in an American flag”.
