DAMASCUS, April 27 (Xinhua) — An official military source said Wednesday that armed “extremist terrorist groups” have cut off roads in the southern province of Daraa and sniped at passers-by, official SANA news agency reported.
“Terrorist groups” used civil vehicles with forged plates to transfer weaponry and explosives, the source said, adding that army units confronted the groups, killed a number of their members, and chased those who tried to run away.
One of the security forces was killed and five others wounded, including an ambulance driver and a nurse, it said.
In the meantime, the Syrian TV showed footage of the funeral procession of six Syrian policemen and army officers, who it said were killed a day earlier by “extremist terrorist groups.”
Daraa has been the hotbed of more than five weeks of protests in Syria with mounting calls for sweeping reforms. The government has made many gestures to quell the protests and blamed the rising violence on armed thugs and foreign conspiracy.
