The following statement was issued prior to the first round of the presidential election, which was held on Feb. 2. The FMLN candidate came in first place with 49 percent of the vote. The PSL congratulates the FMLN on this initial victory and continues to stand in solidarity as the March 9 runoff approaches.
Dear Sisters and Brothers of the FMLN,
With the most fraternal greeting, the Party for Socialism and Liberation extends our solidarity to the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front. It is a historic moment for El Salvador and the continuing unification process of all Latin America, in which the comrades Salvador Sánchez Cerén and Oscar Ortiz, the candidates of the FMLN for the presidency and vice-presidency of El Salvador, have been exemplary leaders in the struggle for the victory of the Salvadoran people this Sunday, February 2.
Through great sacrifices over decades, the revolutionary Salvadoran people, with the leadership and vision of the FMLN, have been able to demonstrate that there is in fact an alternative to neoliberalism and imperialist domination; that the power of the united and sovereign people can achieve any task.
We extend our internationalist support to the FMLN with the hope that we can unite our movements for a society that is just, communal and free of exploitation and poverty. As we struggle in the belly of the beast, we say “Victory to the FMLN!”
