Condemnation for Israel’s destruction of Muslim graves on eve of Ramadhan
On the eve of Ramadan – the Muslim month of fasting which began today – Israeli bulldozers, backed by police, have destroyed and completely removed more than 200 graves in Jerusalem’s oldest and largest Islamic cemetery.
Israeli forces entered the Ma’man Allah cemetery at 12.30am (21.30 GMT) on 10 August, and demolished 200 gravestones. Bulldozers returned later in the day to destroy dozens more after a Jerusalem court rejected a petition to halt the work.
Sarah Colborne, director of campaigns and operations at the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (UK) said: ‘The destruction of Muslim graves on the eve of Ramadhan – the holiest month in the Muslim calendar – is a vile act of religious desecration by Israel, which should be condemned around the world. It is aimed not only at Muslims in Jerusalem, but around the world.
‘The Ma’man Allah cemetery has been repeatedly attacked by Israeli forces, and was recently repaired and restored by the Al Aqsa Foundation for Heritage and Endowments. For the Palestinians, this destruction is yet another instance of the violence visited on them daily by occupying Israeli forces, which clearly they have no intention of halting even during Ramadhan.’
