Less than 24 hours after Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak gave a rambling, vague speech on state television transferring some power but refusing to step down — sending protesters gathered in Tahrir Square into a rage, and confused cable news analysts into a frenzy — Vice President Omar Suleiman announced on Friday that Mubarak would indeed step down.

“Today belongs to the people of Egypt,” President Barack Obama said during a televised a press conference broadcast live in the U.S. and Egypt. “There are very few moments in our lives where we have the priviledge to witness history taking place. This is one of those moments.”
