One of his strengths was his anonymity, the enemy knew nothing about him. Hajj Saleh, Hezbollah’s chief security official in Syria, who mastered the security and intelligence game, was performing his security work with extreme caution.

You will not find his name or picture in foreign and Hebrew newspapers or websites, or in secret documents with the Shin Bet and the CIA, which takes every chance to get information related to a Hezbollah cadre. He was a friend of the martyred Hajj Imad Mughniyeh. He accompanied him on various fronts. Nevertheless, the Lebanese did not know his name until after his death. But the land that embraced him in the southern suburbs of Beirut, to Aleppo and Mosul, knows him well, with his light footsteps, his deliberate and mysterious movements, and the nights he spent in the open in every frontline.

On March 3, 2023, Hezbollah mourned Commander Haj Asad Mahmoud Sagheer, “Hajj Saleh”, in statement, “He passed away after a struggle with illness, concluding a great jihadist history known in the arenas of giving and sacrifice.”

Who was Hajj Saleh?

Organizationally, he began his work within the party with the security file. He succeeded and excelled in many operations, especially in the field of security systems, unit work, and building security operations related to fortifying the resistance from infiltration by the Israelis. He has worked as a coordinator between security officials since before the liberation of 2000. He also contributed to building the security capabilities of the resistance axis to face the challenges of the American occupation of Iraq, the Palestinian confrontations, and then the takfiri project. Hajj Salih accompanied Hajj Imad Mughniyeh and coordinated with him directly. Hajj Imad assigned him his first security work in 1982 and discovered his talents and his special ability. He believed in him and put him on this path, benefiting from his experience and work, so Hajj Saleh later became one of his main assistants who took over the management of development operations and programs. The two men believed in the “unifying the fields” strategy, Hajj Saleh was the first to organize the groups that arrived in Iraq to help form, train and support the Iraqi resistance factions after 2004, to confront the US occupation. Then he visited it again after the fall of Mosul in June 2014.

After the martyrdom of Hajj Mughniyeh, Hajj Salih became an important figure with his courageous, intelligent and inspiring personality and his deep knowledge within the party.  Which make martyr leader, Mustafa Badr al-Din “Sayyed Zulfiqar”, insist on Hajj Salih accompanying him, since the beginning of the war on Syria in 2013.

The leader, Assad Saghir, was an exceptional case in resistance work in Syria. He made a quantum leap in security and intelligence work by breaching the ranks of the armed terrorist organizations, which resulted in the assassination of many senior terrorist leaders. He was also a partner in the Syrian security services. He helped build databases and intelligence infrastructure, which are among the most important things developed during the war.

After the martyrdom of Hajj Zulfiqar on May 13, 2016, Hajj Saleh took over the security file of Hezbollah in Syria, “Unit 900”. He was very keen to be anonymous. The US and Israeli intelligence agencies were unable to obtain information about him or the nature of his work and the tasks assigned to him.

Hajj Saleh supported the security agencies that were operating in the region, whether in Iraq, Iran or Syria, in terms of training, development and consultations, based on his comprehensive experience in the security field in confronting the Israeli and takfiri enemies. He also played a central role in chasing down and reducing the number of Zionist agents in Syria and Lebanon and made exceptional and important achievements in this file, which got him the admiration and appreciation of the Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, several times. He supervised negotiations with terrorist organizations in Syria to return martyrs bodies of the resistance to Lebanon, who were martyred during the confrontations, especially in Aleppo, which he was based in for a while and then kept visiting to follow up until its complete liberation. He also participated, as part of his tasks, in lifting the siege on Nubbul, Al-Zahraa, Kefraya, and Al-Foua.

Hajj Saleh was known for his close relation with the Secretary General of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah. He won his confidence in both personal and practical ways, which gave his assessments special attention in most of the areas that he dealt with. Especially since his field work in several places, along with his experience and information that he accumulated over the past decades, cumulatively honed this confidence. In addition to his extensive knowledge of psychological and propaganda warfare. This relationship extends to include martyr Haj Qasem Soleimani. Hajj Saleh followed many files at the request of the martyr Soleimani, due to his location and his knowledge of the tasks and actions he undertakes.

Sayyid Nasrallah directly assigned Hajj Saleh to take the responsibility for the security and military protection of the shrine of Sayyida Zainab (PBUH), and therefore the shrine was not exposed to any real threat throughout the years of the war, despite the constant threats to blow it up and demolish it. Hajj Saleh used to go to the shrine in the late hours of the night alone, making sure himself that the various security measures taken were fully implemented.

Haj Saleh had an exceptionally calm personality, an analytical and strategic vision, a high scientific educational level. He graduated from the Lebanese University for Sciences of Technology. He was religious, decent listener, very humble. He hid his illness from his family and relatives until the last moments, in order to protect their feelings, and he remained cohesive, strong, patient, committed to the smallest details of his treatment. He also continued to carry out his duties non-stop, through various ways of communications from his home.

He had a huge amount of information, many exciting and interesting security stories related to his diaries and his pursuit of Israeli and takfiri agents, along with stories about his colleagues in the resistance given his age and the long experience he got within the party.

After years of fatigue, stress, and constant anxiety over the security of the resistance, its figures and its strategic interests, Hajj Asad Sagheer was diagnosed with colon cancer. A team of doctors was formed to follow up on his health. He was treated in Lebanon and recovered for about a year. Then he resumed his activity again and returned to his work as usual. However, the disease returned again, but this time in his liver and lungs, which led to the aggravation of his health condition, and then to his death in the Great Messenger Hospital (PBUH) on Friday, March 03, 2023.
