Constituency Information: With a population of around 109,000, Birmingham Hall Green is a suburban seat south of the city centre on the outer edges of Birmingham and bordering Solihull in the east.Following their review of parliamentary representation in Birmingham and the West Midlands, the Boundary Commission for England modified the Hall Green seat. The reviewed constituency of Birmingham Hall Green will contain a third of the existing one, passing Billesley and Brandwood on to the constituency of Birmingham Selly Oak. It retains Hall Green itself adding the following new wards: Hall Green, Moseley and Kings Heath, Sparkbrook, and Springfield.
Hall Green’s ward mainly includes a residential area with a wide variety of households in a mixture of owner-occupied, local-authority owned, and privately rented houses. One of its famous landmarks is Sarehole Mill, where J. R. R. Tolkien spent his boyhood and which provided the inspiration for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Compared to the city of Birmingham as a whole, the ward of Hall Green has a lower number of ethnic minority residents with 25.4% compared to 29.6%.
The ward of Kings Heath has been hit in the past by flash floods and in 2005 by a tornado, damaging its business and shopping district. The city is now investing in its development by redirecting local business taxes directly into improvements and promotions of the area.
Sparkbrook ward has 79.3% minority ethnic residents, the second highest non-white population in Birmingham, and is presently represented by three Respect councillors on Birmingham City Council. It also has the eighth highest unemployment rate in Britain, with 13% in 2009.
The car industry is one of the main employers in Birmingham Green Hall, Rover’s nearby factories being one of them.
Stephen McCabe has been the MP since 1997 when Birmingham Hall Green became Labour after being Conservative throughout the 80s and early 90s and the first time it turned red since 1950
McCabe will contest the Birmingham Selly Oak seat in 2010 and has been replaced here by Roger Godsiff, current Labour MP for Birmingham Sparkbrook and Small Heath. Godsiff was selected for the redrawn Birmingham Hall Green seat in 2008, which includes some of his existing constituency and wards which were formerly in the two Birmingham constituencies of Hall Green and Selly Oak.
Since 1997, every one of Birmingham’s parliamentary seats have been Labour. Birmingham Hall Green’s Labour majority is expected to remain strong despite the boundary changes.
