Dear ALL, We are pleased to report that our client, Djamel Ameziane, has been released from secret detention in Algeria. CCR has represented Djamel for more than eight years, challenging the legality of his detention at Guantánamo in federal court and before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. CCR also worked vigorously to try to obtain safe refuge for Djamel outside of Algeria, where he feared persecution. With your support, we were successful in generating several viable opportunities to resettle Djamel in Europe, Canada, or Latin America. Unfortunately, the United States was ultimately not willing to send him anywhere but Algeria. On December 5, 2013, the United States forcibly returned Djamel to Algeria, where he was immediately placed in secret detention. We would like to express our gratitude to the many of you who have been following Djamel’s case, and who made phone calls, wrote emails, and participated in demonstrations. Your support has helped secure his release, and we ask you now to join us as we begin a new phase of our representation of Djamel to ensure that his rights will be respected. CCR will of course continue to vigilantly monitor developments and alert supporters should any new cause for concern arise. We will continue to stand by Djamel as he rebuilds his life after more than a decade of suffering detention without charge. Watch Djamel’s attorney, CCR Senior Staff Attorney J. Wells Dixon, on MSNBC last Sunday discussing recent developments concerning efforts to close the prison at Guantánamo. The Center for Constitutional Rights has led the legal battle over Guantánamo for nearly 12 years, representing clients in two Supreme Court cases and coordinating hundreds of pro bono lawyers across the country, ensuring that nearly all the men detained at Guantánamo have had the option of legal representation. The Center also represents the families of men who died at Guantánamo and men who have been released and are seeking justice in international courts. |
Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely, Vincent Warren Executive Director |
