Bobby Sands was Officer Commanding IRA political prisoners in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh Prison (Also called The Maze) He was born on 9th March 1954 and died on 5th May 1981 after sixty-six days on hunger strike.

Twenty-seven-year old Bobby, after enduring years of solitary confinement and beatings, led the 1981 hunger strike which started on this day 30 years ago, 1st March 1981.

Let us remember him and his struggle for Irish Freedom and commit ourselves to campaign for British withdrawal from Ireland.

Bobby became an international figure who, to this day, continues to inspire not just Irish republicans in their pursuit of freedom from British rule, but people around the world.

We remember the brave struggle of all 10 Hunger Strikers  – Bobby Sands, Francis Hughes, Raymond McCreesh, Patsy O’Hara, Joe McDonnel, Martin Hurson, Kevin Lynch, Kieran Doherty, Thomas McElwee, Mickey Divin.

Everyone, Republican or otherwise has their own particular part to play. No part is too great or too small, no one is too old or too young to do something.
