Because I am hurt
by your immortality,
I am not an angel.
However I am a Chicana
since I came here
just like the ones from
”down there”.
south of the Rio Grande.
I learned how to speck
Spanish very well,
a little and bad english
with a strong accent
because in my country
I could not speak at all.
The military dictatorship*
had censured my poetry
because I was communist.
I feel very much Chicana
growing up here
with la raza Latina.
Here I am,
still in a foreign country
where Iam still needed
fighting for our rights.
