All the Birmingham restaurants and takeaways given a ZERO food hygiene rating

Thinking of going out for a meal or ordering in a takeaway this weekend?
Birmingham has thousands of food businesses so there’s plenty of choice – but there is also a wide variation in food hygiene standards, with ratings ranging from the top score of 5 to a bottom score of 0.

It’s a sudden change from the previous trend. Our previous round-ups of zero-rated premises have shown the number of places with a zero going down over the past two years.
But there are now 100 businesses in the city that have been given a zero, compared with 90 when we last looked in December 2018. See which of the city centre restaurants and takeaways made the list of shame in the video above.

Best restaurants in Birmingham – READ

According to the data on the Food Standards Agency website – which lists the results from every local authority in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland – there are 6,960 businesses in Birmingham serving or selling food, and just over half of those have a top hygiene rating of five. These include restaurants, takeaways, cafes, shops, pubs, hotels, hospitals, schools and universities.
So the number of zero-rated premises is only 1.4 per cent of the total but it does mean all the businesses listed below were awarded 0 and told urgent improvements were necessary.

The area with the highest number of zero-rated premises is the city centre, followed by Sparkhill and Acocks Green in joint second place.

At an unannounced inspection, an environment officer from Birmingham City Council will visit and check:

• how hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
• the condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities
• how the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe and so that the officer can be confident standards will be maintained in the future

0 – Urgent improvement necessary
1 – Major improvement necessary
2 – Improvement necessary
3 – Generally satisfactor
4 – Good
5 – Very good
