44 years after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s assassination:
Join us as we demand justice for
Trayvon Martin’s murder and Sister Shaima Al-Awadhi’s murder.
On February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin was shot dead by George Zimmerman, the self-appointed head of a neighborhood watch program in a gated community in Sanford, Florida. After the 911 calls were released, it became apparent that Zimmerman was racially profiling the young 17-year-old. Zimmerman told the dispatcher that, “This guy looks like he’s up to no good, or he’s on drugs or something.” Before he murdered Trayvon in cold blood, he made sure to also tell the dispatcher
that he “looks Black.” Zimmerman remains free until this day.
Trayvon Martin’s story is not unique. His murder, like that of Emmett Till a generation before, has become a rallying point for millions fed up with racism in the United States. From the hundreds of thousands of Black and Brown people who languish behind bars, to the millions who suffer the daily insults and injuries of racist prejudice and policy, Trayvon Martin’s murder has invigorated people to come out in the streets and demand an end to racist injustice.
On April 10, the grand jury will meet in this case to determine whether Zimmerman will be indicted on homicide charges. On April 7, people will be marching in Sanford to put pressure on the grand jury. In Washington, DC, we will also be marching. Come out to the Million Hoodies March to turn anger into protest and demand justice for Trayvon Martin.
