Amazingly, a media group in Gaza City was filming footage of Vik for a documentary on him. What follows is selected from that footage. I know that in the wake of Vik’s assassination, politics and the world and the endless churning destruction and debate have not stopped. Isabel Kershner is turning a martyr’s death into anti-Hamas hasbara; the Jordanian assassin has reportedly killed himself to evade capture; the zealots try pathetically to wear away the reputation of a hero; war on Libya rages; Iraq burns in a long-running war of profiteering destruction against Iraq. Time does not stop while we mourn, nor does it roll back so we can shake the dead awake, repair the damage and destruction, tell them to get the hell out of Gaza for a moment. Historical time does not cooperate but my time feels like it has stopped, as though classes are going on in an odd otherworldly haze, and my classmates and teachers talk to one another and I can not understand why what they are talking about is important.
