UNASUR pledged its support to Venezuela and denounced any destabilisaiton attempts.
The South American bloc UNASUR showed solidarity with Venezuela Friday and promised to help provide essential goods to the country, where shortages continue to be a problem in some areas, part of what has been termed economic warfare.
“Unasur will convene a special commission through its sectoral bodies to create regional support chains for the distribution of certain basic consumer goods,” UNASUR Secretary General, Ernesto Samper, announced following a meeting with Venezuela’s President Maduro in Caracas.
“The idea is that all countries in the region, through their chains and distribution channels, be able to support distribution efforts from within Venezuela so that these commodities reach all Venezuelans without exception,” he added.
Venezuela has been experiencing shortages in some basic goods in some parts of the country due to businesses hoarding items, against a backdrop of destabilization attempts.
Such economic tactics were to play a key role in the recently exposed coup plot against President Maduro.
Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa has likened recent attacks on Latin America’s progressive and socialist governments to the 1973 overthrow of President Allende in Chile.
