Join the Vigil and Demand End to All Supplies to Egyptian Armed Forces
Called by Birmingham Stop the War
Please join us to show solidarity with the victims of the violence by the Egyptian Military. Official death toll stands at 638.  These innocent Egyptian civilians have become victim of the unwarranted violence by the Military Authorities in Cairo and other cities of Egypt, including Alexandria. Among the dead was a seventeen year old girl shot in the back by the Egyptian Army snipers. She was a young Egyptian exercising her democratic right to protest against the Military’s illegal usurpation of state power. The Western powers let her down by not calling the coup a coup when it happened and continued to provide assistance to the Army when it has clearly acted in defiance of its own peoples.
The many deaths of civilians could have been prevented had President Obama agreed to call the coup, a coup when it happened. He deliberately encouraged the Army to take the drastic actions necessary to reverse the democratic process in Egypt. Following the Military Coup, US was obliged to stop military supplies to Egypt according to US Laws. Yet, Obama failed to call the coup a coup and allowed the military supplies, including the supply of four F-16 fighter Jets as part of the One Billion Dollar deal negotiated between Egypt and the US. The Egyptian Military clearly read Obama’s actions as an encouragement to continue violating the democratic process. This ultimately resulted in the massacre of hundreds of innocent Egyptians.
The Western Powers have once again allowed violation of democratic processes by its friends. There is little wonder that there is so much suspicion in the Arab and Southern countries of the West and its real intent in the region.
We, as people, need to come out and show our solidarity with those fighting for democracy, civil liberties and Human Rights in the region. We need to be clear with our leaders that we want them to demand the restoration of the democratic process in Egypt. This would ensure that no General in Egypt or in the rest of the region would take upon itself to behave as callously as Generals in Egypt have over the last few days.
We need to ensure that the British Government and the European Union would make it very clear publicly to the Generals in Egypt that the coup must be reversed and democratically elected government restored.
Birmingham Stop the War has already planned a meeting on Egypt for the 19th September 2013, 7 pm George Fox Room, Priory Rooms, 40 Bull Street Birmingham B4 6AF Main Speaker Chris Nineham, National Officer Stop the War
