Syrians hold a rally in al-Qusayr to celebrate the restoration of security in the city on June 10, 2013.
Iran Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi says Russia has been pushing for the Islamic Republic’s participation in the upcoming Geneva 2 talks on Syria despite opposition from some countries.

“Russians believe that Iran must be present in this conference, but some countries oppose [Iran’s participation],” Araqchi said on Sunday.

“There have been many disputes over Iran’s presence in this conference, but it is for certain that from the start … we have considered a political solution as the only solution to the Syrian crisis and … the Syrian government and nation should solve the problems of Syria together,” the Iranian diplomat said.”

On May 7, Russia and the United States agreed in Moscow to convene an international conference on Syria, which will serve as a follow-up to an earlier Geneva meeting held in June 2012. Russia has underlined Iran’s presence in the event.
UN-Arab League Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said on June 7 that the event might be held in July. The talks had originally been planned to be held in June.
Araqchi further hailed the Syrian army’s recent military gains in its fight against the foreign-backed Takfiri militants particularly in the strategic cities of al-Qusayr and Aleppo.

“If this city [Aleppo] is also cleared of terrorists and irresponsible armed groups, an important … development will take place in Syria,” Araqchi stated.

On June 5, Syrian forces managed to fully recapture the western town of al-Qusayr, an important center and supply route for the foreign-sponsored militants fighting against the Arab state, following three weeks of combat.
The Syrian army has also been making major advances against the extremist groups in the flashpoint city of Aleppo over the past days.
The turmoil in Syria erupted in March 2011. Since then, many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed.
