Resume Rejection: 7 Reasons You Are Not Making The Cut!

NOVANEWS

Hi readers, I am Karen Rehn, CEO of HH Staffing Services in Sarasota Florida. I have over 26 years of staffing experience and spend many hours a week consulting with our client and job seeking population. I blog daily on the hottest issues in your industries and work hard to spread my experiences with customers, college grads, job seekers, local businesses and organizations. Ask The Boss is a great outlet for our job seekers and customers to write in and ask direct questions to problems they are currently encountering. This weeks question is from a local job seeker. She is not having much luck in this competitive job market and wants to know some common reasons she would encounter resume rejection. Lets take a closer look at some common reasons a client would reject a resume.

Q: What are some common reasons I could be experiencing resume rejection?

A: Resume rejection . . . . more common than you think! This is a competitive market and with all of the other job seekers on the market this can come down to silly things as well as easy to overlook job seeking mistakes. This is the most common resume rejection reasons I came up with:

  1. You Include Your Address. I know this sounds simple but often times hiring managers will just assume the commute is to long or not realize that you are a candidate ready to relocate. Do yourself a favor and take your address off the resume today!
  2. Your Lying. Resume rejection is common among the fibbers! It really does matter, so tell the truth. Don’t embellish and stay true to you. With the internet today there are tons of ways to confirm facts about you personally as well as your previous work experiences.
  3. You fail to list accomplishments. To many job seekers list their job description or duties at their previous positions. We want to see what you accomplished while working for the company. Don’t just talk about your work, show your work and be specific!
  4. Your online reputation is less than desirable. There are two types of resumes – the paper resume and your online resume. Make sure when you Google yourself a picture of you drinking shots at the local bar does not appear. Take the time and clean up your online reputation as it is just as important as your resume!
  5. You included a picture of yourself! Your resume is no place for a selfie! Stay away from pictures all together.
  6. You have an inappropriate email address. You know what I am taking about. Stick with something professional that does not draw attention to something about you. Drunkgirl78@hotmail is not appropriate!
  7. You have TYPOS! Did you have a few people proof read your resume? There may be a few typos in there that are turning off the general onlooker. Have some trusted people in your life take a look at your resume and give some honest feedback. Its worth it!

I hope these resume rejection reasons made you quick take a look at your resume! This is just a simple guideline to follow but my best advice is stick with it. Get as many opinions on your resume from professionals as you can. Follow up with thank yous and hang in there, there is something out there for you! Best Wishes!
