Tripoli: Libyan Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Muhammad al-Sharif said on Friday that Turkey supported his country in liberating the capital, Tripoli, and the military cooperation agreement with it is still in its infancy.

This came in televised statements to the private channel “Al-Ahrar”, one week after the visit of the Turkish Defense Minister, Khulusi Akar, to the capital, Tripoli; To review the progress of the ongoing activities within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries for security and military cooperation.

Sharif explained: “The Turkish-Libyan agreement gave us a lot, and supported us in the liberation of Tripoli, and some areas in the country.”

He continued, “The agreement with Turkey is still in its infancy and not at its end.”

He explained that there are many meetings with the Turkish side, regarding training and providing capabilities.

“The fact is that Turkey is ready to provide any assistance, training, or equipment to Libya,” the chief of staff added.

And last Friday, the Turkish Minister of Defense paid a visit to Tripoli; For a closer look at the progress of the ongoing activities within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding concluded between the two countries for security and military cooperation.

Turkey provides support to the legitimate Libyan government, in implementation of the two memoranda of understanding for security cooperation and the demarcation of maritime borders, signed by the two countries on November 27.

The militia of the revolutionary general Khalifa Hifter, the legitimate government in the oil-rich country, fought an aggression against Tripoli on April 4, 2019, killing and injuring civilians, along with extensive destruction, before incurring extensive losses, in the past months.

And recently, the Libyan army achieved a series of victories that enabled it to liberate the entire western region of the militia, with the exception of the city of Sirte (450 km east of Tripoli), which it is preparing to liberate.
