In front of the Tel Aviv opera building in Israel , supporters of the Palestinian civil society call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions protested the business-as-usual series of performances of Porgy and Bess, by the Capetown opera troupe.
This despite South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s request to observe the Palestinian call. Unlike the vast majority of countless protest actions and vigils, this one, set to tunes from Porgy and Bess, and danced, played, sung by the protest troupe, got extensive media coverage inside Israel (so far mostly in Hebrew). Watch the protest troupe’s video on Youtube and see the English report from Ynet below.

Theater goers arriving at the premiere of the opera Porgy and Bess at the Tel Aviv Opera House on Monday found themselves in the eye of a political storm. Shortly before the opera, performed by South Africa ‘s Cape Town Opera, around 40 left-wing activists held a protest rally and sang slogans denouncing Israel using paraphrased numbers from the songs performed on stage.
