Given the dramatic situation developing in Syria this Socialist Resistance forum “Crisis in Syria: a socialist analysis” is very timely. There have been several terrible massacres some committed by the brutal Assad dictatorship but other forces including the pro-imperialist Free Syrian Army have probably been involved. Syrian state TV station has broadcast a telephone conversation in which it is alleged a rebel commander based in Turkey has called on rebels based in the country to commit a massacre and then blame it on the government.
Sabah Jawad, Iraqi Democrats against Occupation, will talk on the long battle for democracy and political freedoms (the Assad regime has been in power since 1947) by the Syrian people. This crisis was provoked by a series of massive demonstrations calling for democratic freedoms but the imperialist powers are now actively intervening arming and financing the Free Syrian Army. There are regular reports of French and British special forces on the ground in Syria directing and supporting their military activity. The Syrian National Council is calling for a western imposed no fly zone and for western military intervention. Other sections of the Syrian opposition, the local coordinating committees are opposing western military intervention. Socialist Resistance while supporting the movement to overthrow the Assad dictatorship is also opposed to all foriegn military intervention.
