Palestine Calls for UN Protection after Deadly Israeli Bombing of Gaza

Palestine called for protection for its people on Monday following the brutal Israeli bombing campaign on Gaza, which killed 46 Palestinians, including 15 children, Turkish news agency Anadolu reported.
Palestine’s ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, called the strikes “unprovoked and unjustified” while addressing the UN Security Council, according to Anadolu.

“Its real reason is barely veiled: the upcoming Israeli election and the desperation to appeal [to] and appease the extremists,” Mansour said, adding:
“We need protection. Our civilians are entitled to protection. Our children deserve protection.”

Mansour’s remarks follow an Egyptian-mediated truce late on Sunday which ended three days of Israeli bombing of Gaza.
In addition to the 46 dead, 360 Palestinians were wounded, the UN said, with 70 Israelis hurt as Palestinian militants fired rockets and mortars.
Twitter Locks Account of Palestine Chronicle’s Editor, Dr. Ramzy Baroud

The social media platform Twitter has blocked the account of Palestinian journalist and author, Dr. Ramzy Baroud, claiming that his posts about the Israeli war on the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank have ‘violated the rules’ of the company.
#Gaza tonight: 24 killed including 6 children and over 200 wounded. Yet the resistance continues; because it must. #GazaUnderAttack

It is the first time that Baroud, a respected Palestinian academic, author of several books and the Editor of the Palestine Chronicle, is blocked from using the popular platform.
Baroud’s last tweet was a video compilation produced by the Palestine Chronicle showing images and information about the three Palestinains killed in Nablus in an Israeli military raid on Tuesday. The video was a newsreel that had no violent or bloody images.
Like many other Palestinian content producers, Baroud has been active on social media sharing news and analysis about the deadly Israeli war on Gaza, which resulted in the killing of over 40 Palestinians, including 15 children.

Israel Kills Three Palestinians in Nablus, Including Top Fatah Commander

The Israeli army assassinated three Palestinians, including the leader of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in the northern West Bank city of Nablus.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health said that three fighters from the Brigades were killed, identifying them as Ibrahim al-Nabulsi, Islam Sabbouh, and Hussein Taha.
The Ministry said that since the start of the year, Israel has killed 129 Palestinians in both the West Bank and Gaza.

The Israeli Army had announced that it had surrounded al-Nabulsi’s house in the Old City of Nablus. Israel accuses al-Nabulsi of carrying out several resistance attacks against the Israeli army.
According to the Israeli army, Israeli forces used a shoulder-fired missile in their raid, leading to the killing of the Palestinian commander.
The assassinations immediately resulted in mass protests and clashes in Nablus between Palestinians and Israeli troops. Several Palestinians were reportedly wounded as a result.
Commenting on the assassinations, Israeli Minister of Public Security Omar Bar-Lev said: “As we did in Gaza recently, and Nablus today, we will carry on this way in any time and place.”
A spokesperson of the Resistance movement Hamas said in response: “It is obvious that we are in a new stage of the struggle against the occupation, namely, a continued engagement throughout West Bank cities”.

Palestinian Resistance Group Issues Strong Warning to Tel Aviv

Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Ziyad Al-Nakhala said on Monday that his fighters would take up arms again if Israel violates the terms of an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire that ended three days of airstrikes and rocket attacks.
Israel and the Islamic Jihad agreed on Sunday to a ceasefire, which came into effect shortly before midnight. The truce, facilitated by Egyptian negotiators, ended three days of Israeli attacks and Palestinian retaliation, which left 44 Palestinian dead and over 300 wounded, including many children and women.
In a speech on Monday, Al-Nakhala called the Islamic Jihad to Israeli attacks a “victory”. While no Israelis were killed by the rockets his group launched from Gaza, Al-Nakhala said that the Islamic Jihad campaign nevertheless demonstrated “unity” among the various Resistance factions operating in Gaza.

Hamas, the largest of these groups and the governing authority of the Palestinian enclave, did not directly take part in the attacks.
Al-Nakhala told his supporters that “if the enemy does not abide by what we agreed on through the Egyptian mediator, we will resume fighting again.”
Meanwhile, in Israel, Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s office warned that if the ceasefire is violated by the Palestinian Resistance, “the State of Israel maintains the right to respond strongly.”

The terms of the agreement have not been made public. However, as negotiations took place on Sunday, Al-Nakhala told reporters that his side demanded the release of Khalil Awawda and Bassem Saadi. The former is an Islamic Jihad member on a hunger strike in an Israeli prison, while the latter is the group’s West Bank leader, who was arrested and beaten by Israeli forces in a raid last Monday.
Israel, however, did not agree to release either man, officials briefed reporters on Monday. The Times of Israel reported that West Jerusalem has “no intention” of turning over either prisoner.
Saadi’s arrest was largely responsible for kicking off the latest round of attacks between Israel and Palestinian fighters, which was the bloodiest since Israel and Hamas fought a 15-day war in May 2021.

After the arrest operation, in which a Palestinian teenager was killed, Islamic Jihad fighters were placed on high alert, and Israel launched a series of strikes on the organization beginning on Friday, citing an immediate threat to the state from the group. Tel Aviv, however, provided no evidence of an Islamic Jihad plan to attack Israel.
Beginning on Friday with an airstrike on the home of Islamic Jihad commander Tayseer al-Jabari, ‘Operation Breaking Dawn’ resulted in massive destruction throughout the besieged and impoverished Gaza Strip. At least 44 Palestinians were killed, including 15 children and over 300 were wounded, mostly civilians.
As the ceasefire held on Monday afternoon, Israel allowed trucks carrying fuel and food to enter the enclave. Israeli residents and settlers near the Gazan border were told that they no longer needed to remain near bomb shelters, and schools, businesses, and public transportation in these areas returned to normal.

Palestinians, however, are left with the massive task of removing rubble, digging up for the missing, and rebuilding what has been destroyed.

Israel ‘Saved Countless Lives’, Biden Says

US President Joe Biden has commended the Israeli government for defending its people and saving “countless lives” during so-called ‘Operation Breaking Dawn’ against Palestinian resistance in Gaza.
Three days of continued Israeli attacks on Gaza has resulted in the killing of 41 Palestinians and the wounding of hundreds.
“My support for Israel’s security is long-standing and unwavering — including its right to defend itself against attacks,” Biden said in a statement on Sunday night, as the ceasefire appeared to be holding.
“Over these recent days, Israel has defended its people from indiscriminate rocket attacks launched by the terrorist group Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and the United States is proud of our support for Israel’s Iron-Dome, which intercepted hundreds of rockets and saved countless lives,” Biden added.
The truce followed three days of intense Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip, resulting in the death of 41 Palestinians, including 15 children and 4 women, Aljazeera, citing Palestinian sources reported.
311 Palestinians were reportedly wounded in the Israeli attack.
Biden called reported civilian deaths in Gaza a “tragedy” and urged a “timely and thorough investigation.” No casualties on the Israeli side have been reported.
The flare-up of tensions began last Monday, after Israel arrested Islamic Jihad’s West Bank leader, Bassem Saadi. A Palestinian teenager was killed during the raid on Saadi’s home.
Amid an outcry among Palestinians, the PIJ threatened retaliation and placed its fighters in Gaza on high alert.

On Friday, the Israeli army launched Operation Breaking Dawn, citing the “imminent threat of attack against Israeli civilians posed by the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization.” Israel provided no proof of the allegation.
The first strikes killed a senior PIJ commander, Tayseer al-Jabari, and by Sunday “essentially, all of the senior officials of Gaza’s Islamic Jihad have been eliminated,” according to the Israeli military.

Hundreds of Palestinian rockets were also fired on Israel as a retaliation, although no casualties on the Israeli side were reported. The Israeli army has claimed that it targeted 140 positions in Gaza.
The unprovoked Israeli attacks were widely condemned by Palestinians and many countries around the world, especially as the majority of the dead and wounded were from the civilian population. They include Turkey, South Africa, Tunisia, and Saudi Arabia, among others.
Israel claimed that its war was a preemptive one to prevent an attack by the Islamic Jihad on Israeli targets. However, Israel provided no proof of such claims.

Tensions were building up for days prior to the war, which started on Friday. It began when the Israeli army arrested and beat an Islamic Jihad leader, Bassam al-Saadi, in the West Bank.
The Islamic Jihad had demanded that Israel must release al-Saadi. Instead, the Israeli military attacked Gaza and assassinated two top Islamic Jihad leaders, Tyseer al-Ja’bari and Khalid Mansour.

Ukraine Declares Support for Israel, Condemns Palestinian ‘Terrorism’

As the Israeli aggression on the besieged Gaza Strip continues, Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel Yevgen Korniychuk expressed his full support for Tel Aviv, Israeli media reported on Sunday.
“As a Ukrainian whose country is under a very brutal attack by its neighbor, I feel great sympathy towards the Israeli public,” Korniychuk said in a statement.
“Attacks on women and children are reprehensible,” Korniychuk added. “Terrorism and malicious attacks against civilians are the daily reality of Israelis and Ukrainians and this appalling threat must be stopped immediately.”

Saudi Arabia Condemns Israeli Aggression, Calls on International Community to Help

Saudi Arabia late Saturday condemned the ongoing Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, which left over 30 Palestinians dead and dozens injured.
A statement by the Saudi Foreign Ministry said the kingdom stands by the Palestinian people, calling on the international community to,
“shoulder its responsibility to end the escalation, provide the necessary protection to civilians and exert all efforts to end this conflict.”
Israel launched a military offensive in the Gaza Strip on Friday citing an “imminent threat of attack” by the Islamic Jihad resistance group.
The attacks came amid rising tensions across the Palestinian territories since Monday, when Israeli forces detained Bassam al-Saadi, a senior leader of Islamic Jihad, in a raid in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin.
Over 30 Palestinians have been killed, including six children and four women, and over 250 others injured in the Israeli offensive, according to the Health Ministry
Saudi Arabia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel.
South Africa Strongly Condemns Israeli Aggression on Gaza

South Africa has strongly condemned the Israeli aggression on the Gaza strip which has so far claimed the lives of 32 Palestinians, predominantly civilians, and injured more than 210 others, the official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) said it is concerned that Israeli military statements indicate that the operation would “take a long time” and that the ongoing aggression continues to place innocent civilians at severe risk.

“Attacks that kill innocent civilians have no justification, and they are more abhorrent as they are committed by an occupying power which has besieged the Gaza Strip for over a decade in contravention of international law,” said DIRCO.
Pretoria also said that, as an occupying power, Israel has specific obligations in terms of international human rights and humanitarian law, which it continues to breach without being held accountable.

“The international community has an obligation to ensure that international law is not violated indiscriminately and to urgently stop the Israeli occupation forces repeated attacks against civilians, especially women and children as well as the illegal blockade in Gaza,’’ it said.
It added that the killing of children by the Israeli government must be urgently addressed.
