“It is with heavy hearts that we share that at 4:29 p.m. this afternoon, Claire Davis passed away, with her family at her side,” Littleton Adventist Hospital said in a statement.
“Despite the best efforts of our physicians and nursing staff, and Claire’s fighting spirit, her injuries were too severe and the most advanced medical treatments could not prevent this tragic loss of life.”
The 17-year-old Claire was in critical condition after being shot in the head by classmate Karl Pierson on Dec. 13.
Pierson entered the school in Centennial, Colo., armed with a shotgun, reportedly targeting a staff member, whom he did not encounter.
Claire Davis was likely a random target. Pierson shot himself to death less than two minutes after shooting Davis.
Arapahoe High School is just a few miles from Columbine High, site of a 1999 mass shooting.
The US student was shot on the one-year anniversary of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn, where 20 students and six adults were killed.
According to an investigation by the Daily Beast, one school shooting has taken place in America every two weeks on average over the past year.
At least 24 school shootings have killed at least 17 people since Newtown.
The shootings occurred on school campuses when students were present. Shootings that took place after hours on school grounds were not included.
