China Decries President Obama’s and Dalai Lama’s Meeting

China has decried the upcoming meeting between President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama. The issue at hand that has caused the childish requests and threats of damaging relations from China occurred as a result of China’s unwillingness to consider Tibet a separate and sovereign nation. How is this issue or any other the United States’ problem?

Irrespective of what the past and current issues are between the Tibetan nation and China, why should the United States and its President refuse to meet with the Dalai Lama? As a country, we cannot defer to every nation that threatens and tries to bully their way into our mist through threats of refusing to do business or damaging future relationships. The people of the United States elect the President of the United States, a decision not shared by the people of China. It is not up to another government or its people to determine who the United States, or its President welcome.

If we as a nation defer to every country on their requests concerning who we engage with, then we are no longer an independent nation. We will become a pawn whose decisions are based on the happiness of other nations. China has to focus on its affairs and let the United States handle the business affairs within North America. There is nothing wrong with leaders meeting with non-hostile parties or any individual who seek peace rather than war. This should not be an issue for China to become sour over. It is time to focus on peace and positive resolutions for issues that plague our nation and the world, instead of playing school yard games that are typical of middle school children.

The United States is a sovereign nation that is capable of making its own decisions whether those decisions include the Dalai Lama or any other it sees fit. If the United States refuses to welcome the Dalai Lama, what will be the next requests by China and other nations that consider the US eager to please and easy to bully?
