Terror Attack To Coincide with AIPAC Conference!

“Today Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was present for both the U.S. 9/11 and the U.K. 7/7 terror attacks, comes to Washington, DC, and will remain in the U.S. until late next week. The last time he visited, secret national level nuclear war games began, and four U.S. nuclear reactors had emergencies.”

Constitutional Captains Coup

L to R: SPC Pat Tillman, Rachel Corrie, SPC Alyssa Peterson, CPT Eric May, COL Ted Westhusing

Tuesday, 5/17/11 – Yesterday was the beginning of an ominous set of events in the U.S. and Israel, the sum of which warrants — demands – the most dire conclusions and counteractions. As principled patriots read and reflect, I urge them to listen to and learn from my recorded broadcast of military coup orders accepted, even applauded, by half a dozen Ghost Troop officers,. Most of us were mere captains,  but we acted decisively — in accordance with our military training — to preempt what was clearly treason under Article 3, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution“Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.”

BP was trying to destroy the dilapidated refinery in Texas City, Texas — and its citizens. The events were historic, and all of us, from all branches of the military, agreed that any U.S. commissioned or noncommissioned officer — and most of us had been both — would have done the same thing we had done, if confronted by the same circumstances. I only discovered last year that Israeli security had set up Texas City with its counterterror program.

With informed circles of the military now aware that foreign and domestic enemies are now preparing another false flag operation, with preparations remarkably similar those of 2005, I exhort them to cross all normal barriers to obey the dictates of conscience and defend the American people. The Romans expressed our duty succinctly: Salus populi suprema lex est. (The welfare of the people is the highest law.)

For the record, our actions are all copied and confirmed in BP 7/28 Nuke Plan vs. U.S. Officers Coup. Afterwards, we identified ourselves to military high commanders and a dozen different local and national law enforcement agencies. Everyone knew what we had done, and everyone was afraid to get involved. We were never questioned, arrested or tried for our actions. As the coup’s commanding officer, I had a strong hunch that I wouldn’t be alive much longer, and I was half right. Within a couple of months I began to feel weak and sluggish, then was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. Now I write using an eye-controlled computer; I’m a quadriplegic on a ventilator. I’m glad to have done what I did, and only wish I could do it again.

“We are benefiting from one thing, and that is the attack on the Twin Towers and Pentagon.” — Benjamin Netanyahu

False Flag  Factors

There are two kinds of false flag attacks that threaten the American people for the rest of May, geological and nuclear. Fukushima suffered both two months ago, and demonstrated the logical extreme of disaster capitalism: depopulation.

National Level Exercise (NLE) 2011 has begun, joining ongoing Vigilant Guard 2011, which was kept secret until it began Saturday. The two war games script terrorist attacks, earthquakes and cyber-warfare.

Space Shuttle Endeavour has lifted off, and will remain in orbit for the rest of the month. Its sister Discovery was aloft when Japan’s megaquake cycle began with a 7.2 quake on March 9. It was also orbiting during what was probably a HAARP attack against the Houston area on July 28, 2005, as the nearby BP refinery ten miles south of NASA exploded and burned. Because of these events many researchers consider the Space Shuttle program to be part of the Star Wars offensive panoply.

Rahm “The Bomb” Emanuel has been inaugurated as Chicago mayor. He is an Israeli military veteran whose father was a member of the notorious Jewish Irgun terror organization. In the last two weeks he has appointedGene McCarthy, a key NYC 9/11 police official, as Chicago’s top cop, and Jewish Chicago Police Department apparatchik Michael Masters as head of Cook County Homeland Security.

Israelis are celebrating the 151st birthday of Theodore Hertzl, who was the father of Zionism, and is alleged to have written the notorious Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, a book setting forth a plan for Jewish world domination, which Jews denounce as an anti-Semitic forgery.

Today Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was present for both the U.S. 9/11 and the U.K. 7/7 terror attacks, comes to Washington, DC, and will remain in the U.S. until late next week. The last time he visited, Barack Obama left the country on a visit to India, secret national level nuclear war games began, and four U.S. nuclear reactors had emergencies. All this, five months before the meltdown in Fukushima — where Israelisecurity was in charge.

“You don’t ever want a crisis to go to waste; it’s an opportunity to do important things.” — Rahm Emanuel

Saturday, May 21, has been heralded by a nationwide billboardcampaign as the day when Jesus will return, initiating the rapture.. Thousands of billboards have programmed Christian Zionists to pray for an apocalypse, and they just may get what they want.

On Sunday, May 22, Obama will be leaving the country, this time forIreland, not India. As I have pointed out elsewhere, the Cabal that masterminded 9/11 uses Cabala coding to organize and orchestrate terror events:

Candidate Obama received a warning when his campaign aircraft nearly suffered a catastrophic failure on 7/7, 2008; the anniversary of the London bombings. He may have dodged assassination on 9/11, 2009, in what CNN and FOX described as an attack on his motorcade as it crossed the Potomac. Later on official Washington pronounced it an unannounced military exercise. On 4/19/11, the anniversary of Waco and Oklahoma City, and first day of the Jewish passover, Michelle Obama had a close call in the skies over the capitol.

Now the threatened Obamas are flying to the Emerald Island on 5/22, where Friday the 13th “news” stories have revealed an Irish Muslim plot to assassinate him, followed by a report that Osama bin Laden had planned to assassinate him. The POTUS is a puppet, a coerced collaborator on notice to get the job of 9/11-2B done — or else.

Earthquake Extermination Estimates

“Others are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves. So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations. It’s real, and that’s the reason why we have to intensify our efforts, and that’s why this is so important.” — Secretary of Defense William Cohen, 1997

FBI, 3/29/2011: Chicago sent nuke warnings to TX, OR, CA and FL

Nuclear Nightmare Notes

On March 29, the Chicago FBI identified four states as recipients of nuclear bomb threats from the Windy City: Texas, Oregon, California and Florida. All these states should be considered secondary targets after Rahm the Bomb’s “Phoenix City” (another name for Chicago). Ghost Troop Cyber-Cavalry has led infowar missions to interdict potential false flag operations in three of the five threatened states. Attempts on Chicago, Houston and Portland have been repeated since 2004, and have each been countered by the same intelligence and information tactics of detection and denunciation. Most of the attempted false flags were in conjunction with major military exercises — like those running now.

Judging Judas Jones

It’s important to understand that Alex Jones and the mainstream alternative media will not expose false flag operations. They are collaborative, well-fed media hogs, much more interested in the troth than the truth. In my eight years as a tactical, operational and sometimes strategic commander in the real infowar, I have never seen Jones involved in any action, except as a fifth columnist. In the 16 events above, he and his cohorts accused those doing the fighting of being COINTELPRO, urging listeners to ignore our accurate warnings. He has destroyed interviews that proved our validity and published false articles to obfuscate our successes. Specifically, he perpetrated one or more of these acts in items 8, 10, 12, 13 and 16 (below). In the others he simply ignored the action to broadcast distraction.

“Holy Horde” History

These are the documented infowar campaigns of Ghost Troop, 3/7 Cyber-Cavalry and its infowar allies of individuals and groups who have fought before us, with us and after us. I salute them all as part of the extended family of The Holy Horde!

Rape Arrest of IMF Head “False Flag”

NOVANEWS

CUFFED OR CURTAILED?

DOMINIQUE STRAUSS-KAHN PLANNED NEW WORLD CURRENCY

THREAT TO “CURRENCY CABAL” LED TO ARREST

By Gordon Duff, Senior Editor

“Much of the $14 trillion in US debt is money Americans have borrowed to replace losses by Wall Street of money that never existed in the first place.  You can’t make stuff like this up, unless, of course, you are a Wall Street power elite.”

There could be nothing more pure as a false flag terror operation than one involving charges of rape.  Dominique Strauss Kahn, charged with an endless array of sexual crimes, rape, multiple sodomy charges is most likely the victim of one of the most obvious ploys known to man called the “honey trap.”  Why was he a target of intelligence operations?  The answer is both simple and complex.

Kahn, unknown to most until this week, has been on a crusade to end the financial crimes that are impoverishing, not only the 3rd world, but destroying the standard of living for Americans and Europeans as well.  His most recent solution, the use of SDR (Special Drawing Right) bonds would be a step toward a global currency.  However, the probable direct cause of his arrest is the fact that SDR bonds can’t be traded on the secondary market or used in wild collaterilization programs such as the Bush era “Ponzi schemes” that allowed Wall Street to create unauthorized money by creating imaginary debt.

That Kahn’s primary backers are Russia and China put a target on his back.  China could continue its undervalued currency but hide its massive reserves of foreign currency with the IMF rather than lending it to the US treasury.  Kahn had become dangerous.

Much of the $14 trillion in US debt is money Americans have borrowed to replace losses by Wall Street of money that never existed in the first place.  You can’t make stuff like this up, unless, of course, you are a Wall Street power elite.

Kahn’s program, which has enjoyed a a generally chilly reception over the past few years, has, with the impending collapse of the US dollar, been gaining momentum, and with this, Khan has become a veritable financial “bin Laden.” In a sense, taking down Kahn is a far bigger victory than the killing, real or imagined, of Osama bin Laden.

THE MEDIA – BANKER STEAMROLLER

The media wolves are out for blood.    Those trying to nail the hide of Dominique Strauss-Kahn to the wall forgot the adage, “less is more.”

First, we have to admit to ourselves that intelligence agencies work for financial institutions, not for nations.  That concept is difficult for some, more simple to understand for others.  In fact, were financial institutions able to speak, rather than simply grunt, they would tell you that there is no such thing as a nation at all.  They make the laws, they take what they want and, in this case, they destroy whoever is in their way.

Nobody has been “in the way” quite as bad as Franco-Israeli IMF chief Dominque Strauss-Kahn.

This week, the US debt crossed the $14 trillion dollar level and became, by every official estimate, unsustainable.  The American economy can no longer pay interest on its outstanding treasury bonds nor sustain the value of its currency.  Similarly, Greece has gone back to the European Union for another bail out and more nations are to follow for a second round of “hand outs.”  From a financial standpoint, the European Union has failed and even the Euro itself is threatened.

Dominique Strauss Kahn, director of the IMF, has been campaigning for a world currency but, moreover, an IMF issued bond that would make it impossible for the United States to continue marketing its T-Bills, the worthless paper that underwrites America’s endless debt but also represents most of the financial holdings of the world itself.  Most money in the world is actually nothing more than worthless American debt.

This is how the UK Telegraph puts it:

International Monetary Fund director Dominique Strauss-Kahn (left) calls for new world currency … Dominique Strauss-Kahn, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, has called for a new world currency that would challenge the dominance of the dollar and protect against future financial instability … “Global imbalances are back, with issues that worried us before the crisis – large and volatile capital flows, exchange rate pressures, rapidly growing excess reserves – on the front burner once again,” Strauss-Kahn said … “Using the SDR to price global trade and denominate financial assets would provide a buffer from exchange rate volatility,” Strauss-Kahn said, while “issuing SDR-denominated bonds could create a potentially new class of reserve assets.” – UK Telegraph

It is possible that the head of the IMF is a sex criminal.  There is more than minor evidence that crimes of the nature attributed to Khan, in fact crimes far worse, are common place among the elite of Washington and New York, particularly elected officials.
However, considering the timing and circumstances, it is extremely unlikely that the head of the IMF is a sex criminal.  Do we notice the smell of another “Monica Lewinsky” scenario, but with a twist?

Pakistan: Neither Complicit nor Incompetent

Questions Galore

by Huma Hashmi-Hanley

So it’s finally out! U.S. to deploy troops if Pakistan nukes come under threat, according to Sunday Express.

(Islamabad, Pakistan – May 16, 2011) – They waited for the most opportune moment to make this statement, which was after the Bin Laden killing. And the point was proven with the targetting of FC recruits and other terrorist incidents, which occurred after Bin Laden’s demise. Convenient, to say the least! Getting back to the Bin Laden killing, very pertinent questions have still not been answered.

  • The U.S. Special Forces were equipped with cameras when they raided Osama’s compound, why hasn’t the video been released? “Hazy” said the White House.

  • Saddam Hussein’s sons’ bullet-riddled bodies were displayed in photos worldwide, as also were photos of Saddam’s lynching, yet Osama’s, the world’s most notorious terrorist footage is still kept hidden. Why?

  • Who is to verify the authenticity of the video showing Osama viewing himself on TV in the infamous compound? The U.S.?

  • Why was not Osama moving from place to place and was a sitting duck?

  • Who is going to verify the results of the DNA test conducted by the USA

  • Statements being leaked to the media about Osama’s wives and a statement by his daughter are another question mark. Who is leaking these statements? And why isn’t his family being shown to the media and the people?

  • Worryingly, the tapes and manuscripts called ‘treasure trove of info’ are also going to be used for further attacks by the U.S. Is this material gospel truth?

  • Most importantly, if the U.S. did manage to claim the head of Osama in the said operation in Abottabad, why wasn’t he captured alive, but struck down unarmed by brave U.S. Navy Seals

  • The biggest question: Was it really Osama who was killed, taken away and dumped at sea?

As they say, the proof lies in the pudding. Alas, I have gone blind searching for the elusive ‘imaginary’ pudding.

The world witnessed the drama of the century unfold on May 2nd. After 9/11, the biggest farce was played out, and this time the unsuspecting victim was Pakistan. So my friends, there was neither complicity nor incompetence on Pakistan’s part. No one was aware as it was all a hoax. Until facts are established to the contrary, logic defies any other explanation, but that it was not Osama bin Laden on that fateful night.

Now the Mother of all Questions: Did Osama plan and execute the 9/11 attacks from a cave in Afghanistan, or was it an ‘inside job’? Elementary, my dear Watson, as the latter seems more likely, especially witnessing the aftermath: war in Iraq, Afghanistan…Pakistan? So WMDs stand for ‘Walnuts Most Delightful’?

Putting conspiracy theories aside, let’s look at facts:

As exemplified with the phenomenally accurate drone strikes in the northern regions of Pakistan and more recently in Libya and Yemen, the U.S., as the world’s only superpower, holds the military monopoly in the mastery of drone technology for pilotless attack aircraft. Recent revelations have provided critical answers to 9/11 with the QRS-11 microprocessor, a computer chip installed on aircraft autopilot systems resulting in an uninterruptible autopilot transforming any aircraft into a remotely-controlled “drone”.

On September 11, 2001, Captain McConnell, a former 35-year highly-qualified and experienced Air National Guard F-16 pilot, whose unit stationed out of Fargo, North Dakota stood the ‘ready alert’ NORAD watch at Langley AFB just south of Washington, DC. Two of his squadron mates had been launched that day in pursuit of an airborne target inbound to Washington, DC, but were vectored due east over the Atlantic Ocean even though the inbound hostile target had been acquired on Air Traffic Control and AWACS aircraft radar.

Meanwhile, in the rear seat of another dual seat F-16, already airborne from the same Fargo North Dakota Air National Guard squadron, sat the New York State Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and this before any aircraft had struck any targets that day. Concurrently, a FEMA AWACS aircraft orbited overhead New England as a supposed participant in a joint military exercise.

In 1999, President Bill Clinton had transferred the military AWACS aircraft from the U.S. Air Force inventory to FEMA. This same pilotless technology was available on September 11, 2001 and in 2006, the Boeing Aircraft Corporation quietly settled a suit with a $650-million settlement with the Department of Justice for integrating this technology into the autopilot systems of their aircraft.

AWACS aircraft are fully capable of jamming airborne communications systems and disappearing/appearing/replacing radar contacts on air traffic controllers’ radar screens. It has been conclusively proven with evidence that the FEMA AWACS aircraft orbiting overhead Washington DC and New York City on 9/11 was employed to ‘disappear’ American flight 77 that departed Washington Dulles Airport and replace the radar signature with the inbound Navy A-3 Skywarrior aircraft adorn with an American Airlines paint job that struck the Pentagon that day, which contained explosive materials.

Supporting evidence of secretly obtained of copied encrypted Nextel text messages emanating on 9/11 from the ‘City of London’ to the city of Chicago and NASA further strengthen allegations of collusion, deceit, and traitorous deeds by numerous agencies and governments.

Any wonder, that the Stealth helicopters employed in the raid on the compound evaded radar detection?

9-11 is cloaked in secrecy and no subsequent credible investigation has been conducted. This time around, history will not repeat itself, as Pakistan will ensure that the wool will not be pulled over the eyes of the world and truth and justice will prevail.

Senator Kerry is willing to demonstrate his sincerity by writing in his blood that the U.S. has no evil designs on our nukes. Thank you, sir, we respect you, but do not trust you.

So our message is: BACK OFF! We are a proud nation. Mistakes have been made like the Raymond Davis fiasco, thanks to our benevolent rulers, but now we stand on our own feet and may starve…but we will not compromise on our country’s sovereignty.

Pakistan and Nuclear Blackmail

NOVANEWS

The Cat is Out of the Bag

by Asif Haroon Raja

India had waged a war in 1947 to annex princely state of Kashmir and prevent it from acceding to Pakistan. But for valiant response action of Pak Army and Azad forces, India would have gobbled up whole of it. Indian forces invaded Pakistan in 1965 without formally declaring war so as to destroy Pak armed forces but could not do so. Within six years Pakistan was once again invaded but after sufficiently weakening it from within through subversion and signing a treaty with former Soviet Union. As a consequence, Pakistan was broken into two. Despite the 1971 disaster and despite India going nuclear in 1974 Pakistan could not be overawed by India owing to ZA Bhutto’s leadership qualities. India tried hard to browbeat Pakistan but each of its intended military assault got thwarted owing to Pakistan’s tenacious resolve to fight back.

Pakistan’s nuclear program which commenced in 1976 was meant to save itself from further truncation. It remained under heavy fire of Indo-US-western media campaign. It came under US scrutiny when it was in its infancy in 1979. Relentless efforts were made to restrain Pakistan from pursuing this program. Not only the author of the program ZA Bhutto was made a horrible example, Pakistan was put under sanctions by Jimmy Carter in 1979. USA and the west created a barrier around Pakistan to prevent it from obtaining fissile materials for its nuclear program from anywhere.

Determined to preserve its sovereignty and integrity, Pakistan had to perforce make a cut on its other needs and procure its nuclear requirements from the international black market on exorbitant prices. But for Afghan war against the Soviets, it might have become exceedingly difficult for Pakistan under Gen Zia to make the program reach its logical end. Likewise, Pakistan’s missile program was also subjected to intense pressure and it was alleged that China and North Korea were secretly helping it in constructing ballistic missiles.

After becoming a strategic partner of USA and Israel in early 1990s, India has been trying hard to get Pakistan declared a failed and a terrorist state involved in cross border terrorism in Indian held Kashmir and in nuclear proliferation. Pakistan nuclear program was demonized and given the name of Islamic bomb. Fears were expressed that it may not be passed on to radical Arab states like Libya for use against Israel. Indian and Israeli air force jointly planned to destroy Kahuta Plant through a surprise surgical strike and on few occasions came close to it. Luckily there were no Mir Jafars within our ranks at that time and the whole nation was united behind the nuclear program and as such nefarious designs of our enemies couldn’t succeed.

It was owing to nation’s unity which gave heart to Nawaz Sharif to give a tit for tat response to Indian nuclear tests in May 1998 despite heavy pressure from USA an UK. Pakistan was put under another set of sanctions which were withdrawn only when Pakistan under Gen Musharraf agreed to do as told to do in the aftermath of 9/11. With it, the era of erosion of Pakistan’s sovereignty commenced.

9/11 gave an opportunity of the century to India to use terrorism as a card to penalize Pakistan. In concert with other powers, India made use of Afghan soil to unleash biggest psychological operations and covert war against Pakistan in world’s history to weaken Pakistan from within. Twice the entire Indian military might came on Pakistan’s border to launch a decisive war.

In 2004-05, AQ Khan Network was demonized and Pakistan pressured to open up its nuclear sites for inspection by UN inspectors or IAEA. Hoax of this network was played up to present Pakistan as an irresponsible and nuclear proliferation state so as to deny civilian nuclear deal to Pakistan as was offered to India in 2006. Pakistan was not excused even when Dr AQ made an apology to the nation for passing deigns of obsolete P-5s to Iran and Libya and Pakistan took adequate measures to prevent such a recurrence.

The US then started drumming up safety and security of Pakistan’s nuclear program alleging that security measures were inadequate and in the backdrop of increasing strength of militants, likelihood of nukes falling in wrong hands couldn’t be ruled out. The US think tanks and media kept playing the theme of ‘wrong hands’ despite Pakistan taking extraordinary measures to safeguard its nuclear sites and the IAEA as well as US inspecting teams expressing their satisfaction. Emphasis was on having Pak-US joint protection teams. The US media then came up with fanciful tales about the US Special Forces swooping in to take away the nukes just before they could be pinched by militants. Different scenarios were discussed and war gamed.

It was in this timeframe that Indian Army Chief Gen Kapoor came out with India’s Cold Start doctrine and tried to frighten Pakistan that a viable solution to Pakistan’s nuclear strength has been found which would render its deterrence valueless. Award of civilian nuclear deal to India by USA and allowing it free access to Nuclear Suppliers Groups was meant to bolster Indian nuclear capability and to weaken Pakistan’s deterrence.

146700 troops of Pak Army and paramilitary forces are deeply embroiled in fighting own people in troubled north-western regions since 2002. Pakistan has lost $68 billion in fighting US dictated war on terror and its economy has gone bankrupt. In terms of human losses, 3579 military persons and 33000 civilians have fallen victim to terrorism and yet there is no end in sight. In the aftermath of Raymond Davis incident followed by Operation Neptune Spear in Abbottabad, Pak-US relations have dipped low and Pakistan’s sacrifices gone down the drain.

Pakistan has been charge sheeted on several counts. 102500 US-NATO troops based in Afghanistan are looking for an opportunity to step into FATA under the plea of hot pursuit operations or to dismantle alleged sanctuaries of militants. In order to disable or steal Pak nukes, a huge network of CIA undercover operatives and Blackwater elements are secretly operating in Pakistan.

These elements in cahoots with anti-Pakistan militant groups will intensify terrorist attacks including group attacks for which training is imparted by US-Indian military trainers in Afghanistan. An impression will be built that these are reprisal acts to avenge Osama’s death. Sensitive installations including nuclear sites will be targeted to scare the world that Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal has become unsafe.

This fear had been drummed up in 2007-08 and reached a crescendo in first quarter of 2009 till such time Operation Rah-e-Rast was launched on 28 April and the hype was defused. The story lost its punch after highly successful operations in Bajaur, Buner, Dir and Swat and later in South Waziristan in October 2009 which broke the back of foreign aided militants. The spin doctors then started playing another story that sympathisers of Taliban working within nuclear facilities might steal nukes and hand them over to the militants.

The old tape has again been switched on in the aftermath of controversial death of OBL on 02 May. The first song has been sung after an interval of about two years by Sunday Express on 15 May 2011. It says the US troops will be deployed in Pakistan if the country’s nuclear installations are threatened by terrorists out to avenge the killing of OBL. It says the plan will be activated without President Zardari’s consent. Obama would order troops to parachute in to protect key nuclear missile sites which would include Sargodha having an airbase and battery of 80 missiles. The newspaper claims that the plan has been approved by Obama. Alex Neill has stated that the US trust in Pakistan’s abilities is extremely low. He added if Obama can persuade the Congress that placing US troops at the installations is necessary to protect US citizens from possible nuclear attack, then that’s what he will do. The US leaders repeatedly lied that they have no ill-designs against Pakistan’s nuclear program. They have at last come out in the open and the cat is out of the bag.

The world had heard President Barack Obama addressing his nation eight hours after the raid in Pakistan on 2 May, 2011 about the death of most wanted man OBL. Imagine next time Obama walking up to the podium in White House in a exhilarating mood and triumphantly announcing, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, I hereby proudly announce that our valiant forces have last night added another feather in their caps by way of successfully disabling Pakistan’s nuclear program which had become a danger to world security’. Amidst thunderous applause from the audience, he would go on, ‘Extremist militants in Pakistan were on the verge of stealing the nukes from the nuclear arsenal but before they could lay their dirty hands upon them and threaten our troops in Afghanistan and the world, all the nukes were swooped away in a jiffy by our Special Forces’. ‘These are now in our safe custody’.

‘This bold act fraught with extreme hazards has made the world including Pakistan safe from a nuclear catastrophe’. ‘I commend the brave hearts for accomplishing this feat with admirable precision and without any loss of human life and I also hasten to extend my appreciation to Pakistan’s political leadership for its intimate cooperation since without their support, this achievement may not have been possible’. ‘I am sure, Pakistan will today be feeling much lighter, safer and secure and will from now on behave in a more responsible and mature manner in its relationship with India which has emerged as an economic and military power of South Asia and an upcoming global power’. ‘It will be in interest of Pakistan to accept India’s ascendancy and live in peace and harmony as a compliant state’. ‘With all our objectives accomplished, I have ordered return of our soldiers from Afghanistan’. ‘God bless you all’.

Independence had been achieved from the clutches of Hindus and British at a very heavy cost. Hard won independence must be preserved with all our might. Now that the US has exposed its intentions, there is an urgent need to free Pakistan from its stranglehold at the earliest before everything is lost. We must joggle our fun loving greedy rulers and warn them not to barter away our freedom in return for dollars and prepare the nation to confront the enemies disguised as friends. Or else the people who have never benefited from American aid would pick up cudgels at their own and re-enact Tunisian and Egyptian examples and go a step further to die fighting rather than giving up their honor without a fight.

America and Israel have lost control of the Middle East narrative (finally)

Posted: 16 May 2011 06:52 AM PDT

So the Arab Spring has arrived in Israel. And how does the Zionist state react? Blame Iran and Syria. It’s a futile tactic and will fail. Nobody serious believes it. Palestinians are calling to be free, free of occupation and free of enslavement. No amount of IDF propaganda (ably assisted by rabid Zionists in the West) will help.
Here’s Peter Beinart, liberal Zionist in the US, writing that the Zionist “dream” is ending:

I grew up believing that we—Americans and Jews—were the shapers of history in the Middle East. We created reality; others watched, baffled, paralyzed, afraid. In 1989, Americans gloated as the Soviet Union, our former rival for Middle Eastern supremacy, retreated ignominiously from the region. When Saddam Hussein tried to challenge us from within, we thrashed him in the Gulf War. Throughout the 1990s, we sent our economists, law professors and investment bankers to try to teach the Arabs globalization, which back then meant copying us. In a thousand ways, sometimes gently, sometimes brutally, we sent the message: We make the rules; you play by them.
For Jews, this sense of being history’s masters was even more intoxicating. For millennia, we had been acted upon. Mere decades earlier, American Jews had watched, trembling and inarticulate, as European Jews were destroyed. But it was that very impotence that made possible the triumph of Zionism, a movement aimed at snatching history’s reins from gentiles, and perhaps even God. Beginning in the early 20th century, Zionists created facts on the ground. Sometimes the great powers applauded; sometimes they condemned, but acre by acre, Jews seized control of their fate. As David Ben-Gurion liked to say, “Our future does not depend on what gentiles say but on what Jews do.” The Arabs reacted with fury, occasional violence, and in Palestine, a national movement of their own. But they could rarely compete, either politically or militarily. We went from strength to strength; they never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
That world is gone. America and Israel are no longer driving history in the Middle East; for the first time in a long time, Arabs are. In Tahrir Square, Egypt’s young made a revolution. President Obama bowed to reality and helped show Hosni Mubarak the door; Benjamin Netanyahu stood athwart history, impotently yelling stop. Now Egypt’s leaders are doing its people’s will, bringing Hamas and Fatah together in preparation for elections. Hamas and Fatah are complying because they fear their own Tahrir Square. They sense that in Palestine too, a populist uprising stirs; that’s part of what yesterday’s marches were about. For American and Israeli leaders accustomed to Palestinian autocrats and Palestinian terrorists, this is something new. Netanyahu and his American backers are demanding that Obama rewind the clock, but he can’t. The Palestinians no longer listen to functionaries like George Mitchell. They have lost faith in American promises, and they no longer fear American threats. Instead, they are putting aside their internal divisions and creating facts on the ground.

The Palestinians are taking control of their destiny because Israel has not. Zionism, which at its best is the purposeful, ethical effort to make Jews safe in the land of Israel, has become—in this government—a mindless land grab, that threatens Jewish safety and Jewish ethics alike. Once upon a time, when the Arabs were hapless and America was omnipotent, Israel could get away with that. Not anymore. If Barack Obama cannot get Benjamin Netanyahu to endorse—and work toward—a Palestinian state near 1967 lines, events will pass them both by. Others will take the initiative; in the Middle East, the U.S. and Israel will increasingly find their destinies in other nation’s hands. For those of us raised to believe that Americanism and Zionism were can-do faiths, it is harder to imagine any crueler irony than that.

What’s happening in post-Mubarak Egypt?

Posted: 16 May 2011 02:38 AM PDT

Most of the global media has moved on from the streets of Cairo and now the situation is more complex. The story is alive, changing constantly. Where to next for a (hopefully) democratic Egypt? America and Israel should be worried.
Australian journalist Austin Mackell has been living in Egypt for a while and has filed this latest intriguing report:

Perihan Abouzeid, the 26 year old owner of an online supermarket, is one of the young, female, twittteriffic activists that the media has so far put, not without justification, at the centre of the story of Egypt’s uprising. When I first met her a month and a bit ago, it was at a posh coffee shop on the island of Zamalek, an island on the Nile populated by foreigners and wealthy Egyptians. She was participating in a meeting of Shabab Masri (Egyptian Youth), a group she formed with other young activists during the eighteen day uprising that ousted Mubarak.
Their plan, she told me, was to travel to the poor and less educated areas to carry out “public awareness” campaigns, utilising debate, performance and other visual mediums to explain the basics of democracy, like why people shouldn’t give their vote to the guy who gives them flour, cooking oil and money the day before the election.

Her participation in politics since then has further driven home the changes. On the day Egypt held their referendum she took to the same downtown streets that had once made her so anxious, donning a T-shirt emblazoned with the slogan “give your vote to Egypt”. Her role was not to tell people which way to vote, but just to encourage them to vote and answer questions about the options to the best of her abilities, and she was amazed by the enthusiastic response. Travelling to poor neighbourhoods has only further strengthened her faith in the people at large. She was especially struck by how many of these people were educated but poor. “They really understand the strong ties between the policies the regime has set and whatever problems and challenges we have in this country”.
On the other hand, she says she has also realised how many wealthier Egyptians, who are so up to date with western fashion, had only engaged with western culture on the consumer level and were otherwise uninterested in the ideals of freedom and democracy. They could be found, during the revolution, sitting in Zamalek’s posh coffee shops, drinking coffee and smoking shisha like nothing was happening.
This shift in perceptions has, as one might assume, led to a substantial shift in her politics. Whereas before she had favoured a liberal capitalist model, she now thinks that “whatever new government is going to have to have a leftist direction”.

Australians no longer accept Zionist narrative

Posted: 15 May 2011 09:06 PM PDT

He’s right, it’s something I see and hear all the time. Countless journalists, editors and politicians may be sent to Israel on Zionist-lobby sponsored trips but this is a sign of weakness, not strength. People are finding out the real news about Zionist occupation of Palestine from alternative sources and brutalisation is hard to sell, no matter how much money is being spent by the usual suspects.
Times are changing:

Israel has to understand it cannot continue to hold public opinion by the throat in countries such as Australia and the United States, according to former Australian ambassador to Egypt Robert Newton.
He was speaking at a dinner in Canberra yesterday arranged by Australians for Justice and Peace in Palestine, to mark the 63rd anniversary of the declaration of the state of Israel.
He said a highly articulate, well-resourced lobby ensured Israel’s interpretation was accepted by most influential politicians, writers and journalists in Australia and the US.
But more Australians, including those of Jewish background, were becoming increasingly uneasy about the continuing violations of human rights of Palestinians in Israel and in camps outside Israel, he said.
Mr Newton, who was recently elected vice-president of the Australia-Palestine Advocacy Network, said the network was made up of groups of people who wanted justice for Palestinians affected by the conflict.
It wanted dialogue with politicians, business and Jewish groups.
Israel’s 63rd anniversary is known by Palestinians as Nakba the catastrophe or disaster when about 700,000 Palestinians were expelled or fled from Israel and hundreds of Palestinian villages there were depopulated and destroyed.
Mr Newton said this was an appalling part of history, endorsed by the United Nations.
The new state of Israel had been assisted in the depopulation of Palestinians by what could only be called terrorist gangs, he said.
He said 500 Palestinian villages had been destroyed and 13,000 Palestinians killed and that Arabs had declared war on Israel.
”Three generations of these Palestinians have suffered terribly as a result of what happened in 1948, 1956 and 1967,” Mr Newton said.

Meanwhile, Israel completely dominated the Palestinians under its occupation. Israel would probably prefer this, including the occasional terrorist attack, than to a negotiated peace.
Mr Newton said many people who were not well informed believed Israel was deserving of support by countries such as Australia and the United States.

Dramatic video shows Palestinians, Syrians entering Israeli-occupied Golan Heights

Posted: 15 May 2011 08:59 PM PDT

Moving times:

A dramatic video published by the website baladee.net shows the moment when hundreds of Palestinian refugees and Syrians break through the border fence from Syria into the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights (part of Syria occupied by Israel in 1967 and illegally annexed in 1981).

The video, which appears to be taken from the Israeli-occupied side shows a group of hundreds or perhaps thousands of marchers carrying Palestinian flags heading toward the boundary fence. Spectators on the Israeli-occupied side – apparently worried about the safety of the marchers – call on them to go back because of the danger of land mines.

However, undeterred, the marchers continue, and break through the border fence as people on both sides call for the liberation of Palestine. As the marchers break through there are scenes of joy, high emotion and embraces with those on the Israeli-occupied side. One man is heard to say, “This is how liberation is.”

Slap across the face

May 16, 2011

This incident occurred inside Israel near the site of two ethnically cleansed Palestinian villages, Kafr Bir’im and Iqrith. The Palestinian Israeli protestors originally made plans to meet up with Palestinian refugees coming from Maroun al Ras, Lebanon. After being prevented from traveling to that meeting place they took their protest to Kafr Bir’im and Iqrith.

These are Israeli police and unarmed Israeli protestors.

Below is a description of the demolition of Iqrit from The Gun and the Olive Branch: The Roots of Violence in the Middle East by David Hirst(Nation Books)

“In July 1951 the Supreme Court ruled in favor of another Christian village, Iqrit, whose inhabitants had been ordered, three years earlier, to leave their homes ‘for two weeks’ until ‘military operations in the area were concluded.’ After this judgement the Military Government found another justification to prevent them from returning. The villagers once more appealed to the Supreme Court, which decided to consider the case on 6 February 1952. But a month and a half before that date, on Christmas Day to be precise, the Israeli Defense Forces took the mukhtar of this Christian community to the top of a nearby hill and forced him to watch the show—the blowing up of every house in the village—which they had laid on for his benefit.”

The village of Bir Am was similarly demolished on September 16, 1953 while an appeal for the residents to return was pending.

More information about the protest in the video and photos @ Arabs48 (Arabic).

Update: Thanks to bijou in comments for providing context and a link to Ami Kaufman over @ +972.

Cornel West says Obama’s homies are Jews who think they’re smart, and Larry Summers blows his mind

May 16, 2011

Philip Weiss

Brother Cornel West talks to brother Chris Hedges at truthdig about his Obama disappointments:

“I was thinking maybe he has at least some progressive populist instincts that could become more manifest after the cautious policies of being a senator and working with [Sen. Joe] Lieberman as his mentor,” he says. “But it became very clear when I looked at the neoliberal economic team. The first announcement of Summers and Geithner I went ballistic. I said, ‘Oh, my God, I have really been misled at a very deep level.’ And the same is true for Dennis Ross and the other neo-imperial elites. I said, ‘I have been thoroughly misled, all this populist language is just a facade. I was under the impression that he might bring in the voices of brother Joseph Stiglitz and brother Paul Krugman

“He feels most comfortable with upper middle-class white and Jewish men who consider themselves very smart, very savvy and very effective in getting what they want,” he says. “He’s got two homes. He has got his family and whatever challenges go on there, and this other home. Larry Summers blows his mind because he’s so smart. He’s got Establishment connections. He’s embracing me. It is this smartness, this truncated brilliance, that titillates and stimulates brother Barack and makes him feel at home. That is very sad for me.

How many years of struggle before Gandhi was mentioned by the State Department– or Mandela?

Today the great Mazin Qumsiyeh’s name was mentioned in a State Department briefing by acting deputy spokesman Mark Toner. The geneticist, the author, the nonviolent activist, Qumsiyeh was arrested yesterday in occupied Al Walajah which is being devoured by Jerusalem. I saw Qumsiyeh last month in Boston, I still haven’t reported on it. I will. What an inspiring figure. The mention:

QUESTION: Are you aware of the arrest in the West Bank of a Palestinian – or American citizen, Palestinian academic, whose last name is Qumsiya?

MR. TONER: Matt, I’m not. We’ll look into it.

QUESTION: Can you check into that?

MR. TONER: Yeah.

QUESTION: He was arrested by the Israelis as part of a —

MR. TONER: Was that today, Matt?

QUESTION: — or during a march.

MR. TONER: Or – was that today or over the weekend?

QUESTION: I believe it was on Saturday or Sunday.

MR. TONER: Okay. We’ll look into it.

QUESTION: Thanks.

MR. TONER: Do you have the name?

QUESTION: Yeah. I’ll give it to you.

MR. TONER: All right. Go ahead.

QUESTION: I have a follow-up on that question. Do you think that the Israelis used excessive force in dealing with the demonstration – demonstrators?

MR. TONER: Well, again, I think what we’re looking for is restraint on all sides. We certainly don’t want to see a continuation of the violence, and certainly, Palestinian security forces did play a constructive role, and that was an encouraging sign. But we call on all sides, I think, to show restraint moving forward. We don’t want to see any more deaths or violence.

Anti-Muslim bigot Walid Shoebat, brought to you by U.S. taxpayers

May 16, 2011

Alex Kane

Late last year, Walid Shoebat, a self-styled “expert” on Islamic extremism, reportedly told public safety personnel attending a Las Vegas anti-terrorism conference that the way to solve the threat posed by terrorists was to “kill them…including the children.”

And on May 11, despite criticism of the Las Vegas speech, Shoebat, who continues to tout his credentials as an “ex-terrorist” in the Palestine Liberation Organization despite serious questions about his purported biography, was welcomed to a similar place. He delivered a keynote address to more public employees who attended the second annual South Dakota Homeland Security Conference held in Rapid City–a conference entirely funded by federal tax money. The topic was “Jihad in America.”

David Montgomery of the Rapid City Journal reported on the speech:

Walid Shoebat, who says he was a former terrorist in the Palestine Liberation Organization before converting to Christianity, said that Americans should focus on what he called the “culture of terrorism” among Muslims rather than “only the ones who carry out the explosive act.”

Shoebat said closet supporters of terrorism exist throughout the Muslim community in mosques, community groups and in the U.S. armed forces.

“You’ve been infiltrated at all levels,” Shoebat said. “Are all Muslims who interpret for the U.S. military terrorists? Of course not. But that doesn’t mean you play Russian roulette.”

Shoebat’s appearance was paid for by a federal grant from the Department of Homeland Security as part of the second annual South Dakota Homeland Security Conference. He also spoke at the first conference last year in Sioux Falls.

Shoebat was invited for a second time to the conference because the speech was highly popular among attendees, Jim Carpenter, the state’s director of homeland security, told Montgomery. “The critiques and evaluations that came back highly recommended that he come back again…We acted on those, and that’s why he came back.”
But even more alarmingly, Shoebat, described by religion writer Richard Bartholomew as “a pseudo-expert on terrorism…[who] teaches thatObama is a secret Muslim and that the Bible has prophesised a Muslim anti-Christ,” is only the tip of an anti-Muslim iceberg being funded by taxpayers. Author and journalist Chris Hedges recently reported that “much of this [anti-Muslim] indoctrination within the law enforcement community is funded under two grant programs for training—the State Homeland Security Program and Urban Areas Security Initiative—which made $1.67 billion available to states in 2010.”

Since September 11, the federal government has poured money into fighting terrorism. But some of this money has gone to pay for public employee attendance at seminars and trainings that feature crude propaganda about Islam. The speakers at these trainings, like Shoebat, also often push a far-right agenda when it comes to the Israel/Palestine conflict. For example, on his website, Shoebat claims that “the Arab refugees are being used as pawns’ to create a terror breeding ground, as a form of aggression against Israel.”

Shoebat and others like him preach bigoted tropes about Islam across the country at similar conferences paid for with taxpayer money. The trend has continued despite more public scrutiny in the form of investigations published by the Washington Post and a March 29 letter from top senators in the Senate’s Homeland Security committee. The letter, authored by Senators Joe Lieberman and Susan Collins, expressed concern about “state and local law enforcement agencies…being trained by individuals who not only do not understand the ideology of violent Islamist extremism but also cast aspersions on a wide swath of ordinary Americans merely because of their religious affiliation.”

The Senate letter came after the publication of a comprehensive report by the Political Research Associates that documented how “public servants are regularly presented with misleading, inflammatory, and dangerous information about the nature of the terror threat.”

“What we are documenting here is the institutionalization of these views in a critical part of our government—those who have the power to monitor, extract, arrest and interrogate people,” Thom Cincotta, the author of the report, told me in a recent interview published in AlterNet.“This isn’t the type of country we want to be. We want to embrace our diversity and build ties with the Muslim-American community.”

But despite the increase in public scrutiny, and demands from the Council on American-Islamic Relations to drop Shoebat from the South Dakota conference, the Shoebat show went on.

The scrutiny of Shoebat was met with a shrug from Carpenter, the state’s director of homeland security. He told the Rapid City Journal that he doesn’t think that “we should be complacent in any way…Sometimes it takes folks to wake us up a little bit.” But in reality, Shoebat and others like him let law enforcement go to sleep on the real work of counter-terrorism.

Glenn Beck announced on his radio show Monday that he is planning to hold a rally in Jerusalem in August called “Restoring Courage.”

It’s like if Father Coughlin had announced he was going to do a Passover broadcast from a moshav in Palestine in 1930-something.  It’s so cynical and evil. As a Jew, I want to pull his hair and shout, STOP USING US!  It makes me rage inside.

Comrades from Egypt yesterday sent me tons of pictures and links about the Palestinian theme from yesterday’s massive demonstrations all over Egypt.  Here is one person kissing this slogan which says:  “Against the will of America and Israel, Jerusalem is ours and Palestine is Arab.”  It is amazing how Thomas Friedman and other Zionists–in an attempt to reassure themselves really–insisted that the Egyptian youths have no foreign policy goals whatever.

“Thousands of Egyptians took to the streets on Friday to push their military rulers to do more to help Palestinians following the overthrow of the country’s president Hosni Mubarak.  Many Egyptians felt Mubarak, a U.S. ally, was too soft on Israel and want their new government to take a much stronger pro-Palestinian stand.  The gatherings in Cairo, Alexandria and El-Arish come amidst preparations by activists to organize a march to the Gaza Strip on Sunday, May 15 — which Palestinians mark as the anniversary of their 1948 displacement following the establishment of Israel.  Egyptian authorities have banned the march, saying the timing was inappropriate given sectarian tensions in Egypt.”

According to Al Ahram portal and Al Jazeera Mubsar Misr she is going to transfer to the famous Kantar women prison and that the prison was being prepared for her reception for days. Al Ahram claims that she would be transferred on a military jet to Cairo like her son. On the other hand other sources say that she is not going to be transferred to Cairo because of security reasons and she will stay with her husband in suit 309 in Sharm El-Sheikh hospital. We are not sure if she is there yet or not. The security authorities in jail stated that they had not received yet any order regarding Thabet.

Egypt to review trial procedures, free protesters
Reuters, CAIRO, May 13 (Reuters) – Egypt’s military rulers said on Friday they would review legal procedures used to try young activists detained after President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in February, and free some., The move meets some of the demands made by anti-corruption activists who staged sit-in strikes in March and April to push for Mubarak and other former top government officials be put on trial.

Eye witness from Marun Ar-Ras
As`ad–not me was in Marun Ar-Ras.  He sent me some observations (I am citing with his permission).  I hope that Anthony Shadid would not dismiss my friend and the others who are in the pictures as agents of the Syrian regime.  As`ad–not me said shorting after he returned hom:  “I saw courage and heroism today in front of my eyes. The sight was unbelievable. 10 death and dozens injured and the Palestinian guys would not stop. It is mind boggling. I was 200 meters behind the fence. The Lebanese army at the end attached us and was shooting like crazy up in the air. They chased us up the whole mountain. A day I won’t forget in my life. Thoussands of bullets wire fired above us to drive us back. Friends were literally at the fence and saw the guys falling. I will upload pics and videos later on FB.  I will email you my thoughts later. We are still under shock. We were literally taking cover behind rocks, I really don’t know what to say.i swear if only these Palestinians are trained, given arms and support, Israel will not last a week. Every shot Asad from Israelis, a wounded or a killed from our side, dozens of ambulances leaving the scene.. and the guys would not stop. Showers of rocks were going the other way, and the damn Israelis snipers were shooting them down one by one.”

Palestinians in Lebanon, at the lonely end of the Arab uprisings, Matthew Cassel
Never is a refugee’s right to return brought into question – except when that refugee is a Palestinian. Climbing up the mountain to reach the Palestinian right-of-return protest in Maroun al-Ras in south Lebanon on Sunday felt a bit like being back in Tahrir Square. The thousands of mostly Palestinian refugees were smiling as they joked about the strenuous climb, and helped each other up the mountain to reach the site where they were going to stage their demonstration. Some knew it could even be dangerous, but that didn’t matter as much as the rare opportunity to join together and call for their rights.

Gaddafi To NATO: ‘You Cannot Kill Me’
TRIPOLI, May 13 (Reuters) – Libyan state television carried brief audio remarks it said were by leader Muammar Gaddafi on Friday in which he taunted NATO as a cowardly crusader and said he was in a place they could not reach. The comments came after Italy’s foreign minister said Gaddafi had very likely left the Libyan capital and probably been wounded by NATO air strikes, a report that Tripoli immediately dismissed as nonsense. “I tell the cowardly crusader (NATO) that I live in a place they cannot reach and where you cannot kill me …. I live in the hearts of the millions,” said the voice, which sounded like Gaddafi’s. There was no accompanying video.

Libya refugees land on Italian island
A total of 1300 refugees, crammed in six boats, have landed on the tiny Mediterranean island of Lampedusa in the last twenty-four hours to escape the civil war in Libya. Some of the refugees accuse coastguards and NATO troops of illegally ignoring distress calls, despite spotting their boats from the air and sea. Around 20,000 migrants have fled to Lampedusa this year alone to escape uprisings in North Africa. Meanwhile, Europe fears a growing wave of migration and is discussing more stringent border controls and ways of sending the immigrants back home. Jonah Hull reports.

Syria: Targeted Arrests of Activists Across Country

No Syria dialogue until killings stop-activist group
AMMAN, May 15 (Reuters) – The main activists’ group coordinating demonstrations against autocratic rule rejected on Sunday a “national dialogue” announced by the authorities, saying they must stop shooting protesters first. “The peaceful demonstrations and civic disobedience will continue … It is morally and politically unacceptable to have national dialogue before stopping all forms of killings and violence against peaceful protesters … lifting the siege on cities and releasing all political prisoners,” the Local Coordination Committees said in a statement sent to Reuters.

Syria sees “relatively peaceful’ protests
A relatively lower number of deaths and injuries of civilians have been reported as large anti-demonstrations were staged across Syria on Friday. Unlike previous Fridays, security forces mostly held their fire – reportedly on the orders of president Bashar al-Assad. But some activists say the reason for the lower number of casualties is a result of a low-turnout of protesters amid heavy military crackdowns and sieges across the country. Zeina Khodr reports on nationwide demonstrations that some activists said were dedicated to Syrian women imprisoned for protesting.

“Rifaat Eid, the leader of the small Alawite community in Tripoli in north Lebanon, says that an indication of the regime’s confidence that it could overcome the rebellion is that it has not yet played its regional cards. Mr. Eid was referring to the sometimes malevolent influence that Syria can exert over its neighbors, including Lebanon, IraqJordan, and Israel. “Syria could open the border with Iraq to jihadists, it has influence with Hamas and Hezbollah. It has many cards to play in Lebanon, but the regime has not used any of them which shows that it is confident,” he says…”

Karin Leukefeld, “Syria: Releasing Detainees, Government Seeks to Meet Opposition Demands”
The release of detainees followed a meeting between the Syrian opposition and Bouthaina Shaaban, the media adviser to President Bashar al-Assad, which Shaaban had mentioned in an interview with a New York Times reporter. Besides the release of prominent civil rights activists, also on the agenda at the meeting was the need to pass a new press law, a law for the establishment of new parties, and a new electoral law, said Shaaban. She announced a national dialogue, which should begin as soon as possible, “possibly next week.” Civil rights activist Louay Hussein, who also participated in the meeting with Shaaban, said that activists demanded that the government permit peaceful protests and sit-ins. Meetings must be also permitted, so that protesters can come to an agreement on a political program and choose their own representatives who will be tasked to convey their demands to government officials. Hussein said to Reuters that activists demanded the withdrawal of plainclothes security forces from all locations and the media’s access to the towns and villages that have been made off limits to them. The release of civil rights activists is a good sign, in the opinion of Hussein. The Syrians with whom I have talked in Damascus welcomed a national dialogue. “We, the Communist Party, have been calling for a national dialogue for a long time,” says a party member, who wishes to remain anonymous. The original protests of people were legitimate, says the party member, especially since the economic development of recent years drove many into deeper poverty. Another Syrian tells me that he is cautiously optimistic. Noting that history shows that it takes time to make reform in Syria, he hopes that the dialogue will be successful.

EXCLUSIVE-Father of bin Laden’s wife rebuffed union at first
SANAA, May 15 (Reuters) – The Yemeni father of Osama bin Laden’s youngest wife, wounded in a U.S. raid that killed the al Qaeda leader, said he initially rebuffed a matchmaker’s proposal that his daughter marry bin Laden, before blessing their union. Ahmed Abdul-Fattah al-Saada said they were married in 1999, well before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, and that all he knew about bin Laden’s politics then was that he had backed insurgents fighting Soviet forces in Afghanistan.

The Killing of Osama bin Laden:Vengeance Has Been Done, Nima Shirazi
It has taken a while for me to write anything regarding Barack Obama’s announcement last Sunday night that members of the US Special Operations Forces (JSOC’s Navy SEAL Team Six) had shot and killed Osama bin Laden in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The reason is primarily due to so many other excellent analysts beating me to the punch and voicing my own feelings far better than I could have myself (thus saving me the time and effort). My own reaction to the news lies somewhere within an amalgam of these articles by Glenn Greenwald and David Sirota in SalonChris Floyd from Empire BurlesqueHaim Baram in H’aretzCord Jefferson in GoodChris Hayes in The NationKai Wright ofColorLines, and this post by W.W. from The Economist.

Bin Laden’s porn collection
Comrade Max is right to be suspicious.  Personally, I only believe that Bin Laden was killed during the raid: the rest are a combination of lies, fabrications, and psychological operations–as they are officially called.  We don’t even know how Bin Laden was killed.  So the porn story could be made up: and it is suspicious that they announced the porn find many days later. I mean, porn did not have to wait for the Arabic linguists of the NSA to translate it before they realize that they stumbled on a porn collection.  I mean, that would have been announced and photographed immediately.  This is not to deny that it is a possibility and that pious Muslims (if we accept that Bin Laden was pious which is a stretch given his bloody record), like other pious members of other religions, are full of hypocrites.

The Arab spring comes to Palestine

May 16, 2011

Adam Horowitz

Karl Vick reports for Time:

After more than 100 Palestinians breached Israel’s border with Syria on Sunday, knocking down a fence and striding into a village in the Golan Heights, overmatched Israeli security forces scrambled to glean what they could from the protesters who had just, without so much as a sidearm, penetrated farther into the country than any army in a generation.

Under close questioning, the infiltrators closed the intelligence gap with a shrug and one word: Facebook. The operation that had caught Israel’s vaunted military and intelligence complex flat-footed was announced, nursed and triggered on the social networking site that has figured in every uprising around the Arab World — and is helping young Palestinians change the terms of their fight against Israel.

The headlines Sunday were all about the violence of the day: at least four people were shot dead by Israeli forces on the Syrian fence line, and as many as 10 were killed either by Israeli or Lebanese army gunfire at a similar demonstration on the nearby frontier with southern Lebanon. The death toll, along with the accounts of stone-throwing and tear gas, comport with the familiar narrative of the conflict, one constructed over years of Israel describing efforts to defend itself. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu encouraged that narrative on Sunday, arguing that the protesters were undermining the very existence of the State of Israel.

But those closer to events found in the day the makings of a new narrative. The Palestinians in Syria, Lebanon and the occupied Palestinian enclaves of Gaza and the West Bank approached Israeli gun positions on Sunday without arms of their own. If some teenagers threw rocks, a protest leader said they had apparently failed to attend the workshops on nonviolence the organizers arranged in what they call a new paradigm for the conflict. The aim, which appears to be building support, aims to re-cast the Palestinian-Israel conflict on the same terms that brought down dictatorships in Egypt and Tunisia.

Massive non-violent protests are aimed at winning international sympathy for the Palestinian perspective, and as a result, forcing Israel to pull out of territories its army has occupied since 1967. As the dust settled Sunday, senior Israeli officers acknowledged their vulnerability to the approach, which dovetails with the strategy of Palestinian leaders to ask the UN General Assembly to recognize a Palestininian state in September.

“What we saw today was the promo for what we might see in September on the day the United Nations declares a state: Thousands of Palestinians marching toward Israeli checkpoints, Israeli settlements and the fence along the West Bank and Gaza Palestinians coming with their bare hands to demonstrate,” a senior Israeli officer tells TIME. “This is a huge problem. Well have to study what happened today to do better.”

Read the entire article “Palestinian Border Protests: The Arab Spring Model for Confronting Israel” here. And for a more indepth report on the background to the protests see Matthew Cassel’s article “Refugees march to return” in the Electronic Intifada.

Update: Tony Karon hits a similar note writing on the Time website putting the protests in the context of the “post-peace process” world and thediscourse’s shifting center of gravity from 1967 to 1948:

Welcome to the post-peace process: The drama that unfolded on Israel’s boundaries on Sunday as 12 Palestinians were killed in a wave of unarmed civil disobedience was but a taste of things to come. That was the warning from Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Sunday night, and he’s certainly got reason to worry: Rather than pin their hopes on a moribund peace process, Palestinians have begun instead to align themselves with the Arab Spring  by pressing for their own rights through acts of people power. Even if there’s no immediate followup to Sunday’s protests, they represent a political crisis of epic proportions, not only for Israel and the United States, but also potentially even for the Palestinian leadership of President Mahmoud Abbas (and even, possibly, for his new Hamas partners in government).

Israel’s security establishment has always seen mass unarmed civil disobedience as far more threatening than rocket fire or suicide bombers, because military responses to non-military challenges weaken Israel’s diplomatic and political standing. The protests also represent a challenge for Abbas, whose proclivity to compromise on issues such as the rights of Palestinian refugees in order to achieve an agreement with Israel is not shared by those taking to the streets.

And while Sunday’s protests that turned deadly on the border with Lebanon and on the cease-fire line with Syria will have suited the agenda of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, those refugees — whose families have lived in squalor since their dispossession by Israel in the conflict over its founding in 1948 — do not need the Assad regime to spur them to stake their (often downplayed) claims in the outcome of any Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Not that there is any Israeli-Palestinian peace process left to speak of. Just last Friday, Obama’s Middle East Special Envoy, Sen. George Mitchell, gave up the pretense that defined his position and resigned. And Sunday’s events were a sharp reminder that the collapse of the peace process does not mean ordinary Palestinians are simply going to accept their lot. Indeed, the conflict is now heading into uncharted waters in which many of the assumption of the past two decades are called into question.

‘Goldstone Report’ is at once a tragedy and a utopian document

May 16, 2011

Lizzy Ratner

Editor’s note: This Thursday night in New York we’re going to be holding an event with a smashing array of speakers, from Naomi Klein to Laura Flanders to Trudie Styler to Noura Erakat to Desmond Travers. (Click on the image above to go buy a ticket.) And also: our co-editor on the Goldstone Report book, Lizzy Ratner, whose genuineness and presence have stirred audiences during our book launch. Last Friday Ratner spoke about the Goldstone Report at the United Nations, to a gathering hosted by the Egyptian Mission and also by the Palestinian observer mission. Here are some of her remarks:

I want to thank the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine for hosting us. We are so honored to be here today and I have to say that I look forward to the day with great anticipation when we are hosted in the Permanent Mission of Palestine, in your own home here at the United Nations. I can’t wait for that moment. And I want to thank the Egyptian mission. It’s an important reminder today– to remember, thanks to the people of Egypt, what is possible when so much seems impossible. When we talk about a situation that’s enormously challenging and depressing and distressing, it’s important to keep this vision of possibility in front of us.

And finally I want to just acknowledge what yesterday was. Israel celebrated it as its Independence Day. For the people of Palestine it marks the Nakba, a day marking 63 years of occupation and expulsion, 63 years of attempting to reclaim dignity and rights. As we talk about the Goldstone Report today, we have to keep that in mind, particularly since so many of the people who lost their homes 63 years ago wound up as refugees in Gaza, which of course was subject to terror and bombardment in 22 days in December 2008 and January of 2009. Many of those people were refugees from the creation of the state of Israel 63 years ago.

[Ratner then read the testimony of Khaled Abd Rabbo about the killings of his three daughters, described here at paragraphs 770 on.]

I read that testimony not to traumatize people and not to try to bludgeon people but to put the suffering of victims, of real people, at the foreground. Today we’re talking about a legal document but this document tells the story of and is based on the suffering of real people, people who do not have justice yet. And for me as a journalist the suffering of civilians during Operation Cast Lead, and the stories throughout the Goldstone Report–that is the reason that the Goldstone Report is so important and that we wanted to create this book and put it out there to the world.

And of course civilians, innocent people, are at the heart of international law, they’re protected under international law, they’re at the heart of the Goldstone Report, and I believe the protection of civilians, the rights of civilians are at the heart of the mission of the United Nations. It was really the horror of what happened to civilians, the extremity of the attack, the negligence, the lack of concern, the disproportionate and in some cases the intentional killing of civilians that made Operation Cast Lead so horrible and that makes the Goldstone Report so incredibly important. It was out of this slaughter that the Goldstone Report emerged….

The report also does a number of other things for us as readers that are incredibly important, to the ongoing struggle for justice for Palestine and Palestinians. The report offers a history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and it really maps out the power relations and the history of occupation, and how an event like Operation Cast Lead stems from 63 years of occupation and dispossession and a system of laws in place that puts one population, the Palestinian population, that holds them oppressed and very much unequal to the Israeli population.

It’s also a tragedy, a book that is a tragedy, and yet it is most important, I would say, as a manifesto for accountability. That’s really what is at the heart of the Goldstone Report. And this is what I say makes it a utopian document. There are lots of people out there right now who are saying this is an evil document, a dangerous document, it needs to be rescinded, it’s a flawed ocument. And I want to say very strongly today that it is actually a visionary document, a hopeful document, a utopian document, which posits a notion of the world where there are international laws that create the possibility of equality, accountability and justice, and these international laws say that perpetrators of gross violations of human rights and human dignity can be brought to justice and should be prosecuted, and through this prosecution you can create a deterrence to future violations of human rights, and you can possibly bring about some sort of reconciliation in the future and end the ongoing violation of people’s dignity.

And so I think this is the heart of what the United Nations is about, and accountability is not yet here. In the case of Khaled Abd Rabbo whose story I began with there’s been no prosecution. No one has been held to account for what was done to his family and to his daughters, and while the Goldstone Report holds forth the possibility of accountability and justice, its promise has not yet been lived up to and I think all of you sitting here who work for the United Nations, you have the ability to make the document live up to its promise, and I would just ask you and beg you to make the document hold up to its promise.

Palestinians are driving the train of history now, Beinart acknowledges

May 16, 2011

Philip Weiss

Peter Beinart has a good piece at Daily Beast. Yes I’ve been saying this for a while. But a good thing that he and the mainstream are waking up. Not denying the moment. This is the greatest wisdom of Rabbi Hillel, readers: If not now, when? (Oh by the way Sullivan is hip too.)

What hit Israel yesterday was the Palestinian version of the Arab spring. Something fundamental has changed. I grew up believing that we—Americans and Jews—were the shapers of history in the Middle East….

For millennia, we [Jews] had been acted upon.

‘Pentagon ignores military sex crimes’

NOVANEWS

Victims of sexual assault in the US military say the Pentagon has turned a blind eye on reports of sex crimes and failed to bring sex offenders to justice.

Military veterans who say they have been sexually abused by their comrades criticize the US Department of Defense (DOD) for promoting a culture of secrecy that fails to prosecute sex offenders in the military service, according to a Tuesday report filed by a Press TV correspondent.

“According to the Department of Defense, nearly 3,200 men and women serving in all branches of the armed forces filed complaints of sexual assault in 2010. Some of them say they were abused in the war zones of Afghanistan and Iraq. DOD estimates that the formal complaints represent less than 14 % of all assaults.

“It’s women and men. A lot of time it’s men. It might be a hazing incident,” said Patrick McCann, director of Men Can Stop Rape.

Although some progress has been made, some men do not accept women in the military and that attitude can lead to sexual violence.

“It’s not sex. It’s an act of power. It’s about dominating and showing control over someone,” McCann added.

Some 16 men and women have filed lawsuits, charging that the Pentagon neglected their complaints of being sexually harassed, assaulted and raped by fellow service members while on active duty.

“The military justice system allowed so many offenders to escape justice,” said sexual assault victim, Myla Haider.

In 2007, DOD reported 2,200 cases of rape in the military. In 2009, the figure jumped to almost 3,300. Some 37 percent of the victims are raped multiple times, 14 percent are gang raped.

Reports show that as many as 3,250 reported rapes or other sexual assaults took place in the US military during 2009 alone. Military sources, however, admit that unreported incidents could be as high as 16,000 since 80 percent of the victims may have never reported such incidents for fear of reprisals, according to Mycentraljersey.com

The US Air Force recently released the results of a study, which found that 1 in 5 women and 1 in 20 men have been sexually assaulted while serving in the Air Force, Truthout.org reported.

Obama’s draft speech to urge ’67 borders, negate PA’s state bid

US president’s coming speech about Washington’s Mideast policy to demand PA recognize Israel, drop unilateral UN bid for statehood, while urging Israel to return to ’67 lines, cease settlement expansion

WASHINGTON – US President Barack Obama is set to give his next political speech at 6pm Thursday, just hours before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu leaves for Washington and according to a draft of the speech, obtained by Yedioth Ahronoth, the American president’s Middle East policy, though unwavering, may not be as discordant as some have feared.

Obama is expected to urge Israel to return to the 1967 lines while negating the Palestinian Authority’s planned unilateral bid for statehood in September.

Prime minister addresses Knesset plenum following ‘Nakba Day’ riots, claims Palestinians to blame for failure of peace process over their refusal to recognize State of Israel. Opposition chairwoman warns of establishment of ‘Hamastan’

According to the draft – which may change again by Thursday – Obama will call on Jerusalem and Ramallah to reignite the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process, saying it is the only way to achieve viable peace.

Obama stands to demand the Palestinian Authority recognize Israel as the Jewish state, and that the Palestinians unequivocally abandon terror.

He is also likely to stress Israel must cease any settlement expansion in the West Bank and further avoid any act which could be construed as changing the status quo on the ground.

The subject of Jerusalem also stands to be included in the American president’s speech: Washington sees the city as the capital of both Israel and the Palestinian state, with its east Jerusalem neighborhoods – which are largely populated by Palestinians – under the PA’s sovereignty, and its Jewish neighborhoods under Israeli sovereignty.

Following Netanyahu’s vehement speech before the Knesset plenum Sunday, it seems Washington has decided to lower its expectations of Netanyahu.

Still, State Department Spokesman Mark Toner said that the White House was not “as pessimistic” as reported, adding that the peace process “faces immense challenges.”

Conspiracy to frame rightists for criminal acts exposed

Major police operation uncovers plot to mask string of criminal assaults as price tag retaliation. Scheme included assassination of Islamic clergyman, multiple bombings

Disaster averted: A special, covert police operation uncovered what has been described as “the match that would have ignited the entire country, inciting the fires of hate between Jews and Arabs.”

The case had been under a gag order until Tuesday. According to initial details cleared for publication the police were unable to uncover a plot to set off an explosive device at the Hassan Bek Mosque in Jaffa and make it appear like an extreme right price tag operation. The device was discovered mere hours before it was meant to be set.

Shortly prior to funeral of Ben-Yosef Livnat, killed in Joseph’s Tomb shooting presumably by Palestinian policemen, settlers embark on price tag retaliation following Palestinian agitation

The operation, dubbed “Violet Wreath,” has been said to unearth a plot “stunning in its scope, sophistication and far-reaching ramifications,” police sources said Tuesday.

The police have 11 suspects in custody, including several family members from Jaffa, who were reportedly doing the bidding of a Jaffa attorney, who wished to settle several business disputes with the proverbial bang.

According to police sources, the case dates back to several 2010 arson cases, which caused over a million dollars in damages.

The police believe the suspects targeted the new scientology center in Jaffa and planned to bring the building down via a gas explosion. To that aim, the loaded a truck they had stolen with fuel tanks and gas containers – while dressed as in traditional haredi garb. The move was meant to stir the future investigation towards a Jewish terror attack against the controversial cult.

Everything was ready – the gas had been pumped through special pipes into the building – and it was only a slight miscalculation in the gas-to-oxygen ratio which prevented a catastrophic blast from turning the building to cinder.

The police were struggling with the case when a lead pointed them to the suspects – members of the Bakher family. The suspects had no criminal records, but surveillance revealed that one of them, A.A, was an explosives expert. He would later become a State witness.

The most nefarious scheme involved a large explosive device meant to assassinate a senior sheikh after Friday prayers at the Hassan Bek Mosque.

The suspects were allegedly planning to use a remote detonator to trigger a car bomb which would have been parked at the entrance. The potential casualties among mosque goes would have numbered in the dozens.

Witness testimonies reveal that they were planning to hide their tracks by spray painting the words “Price Tag” – a term used for reprisals carried out by far-right activists and settlements – nearby.

Police surveillance discovered that the man who ordered the “hit” on the Scientology center was none other than the Scientologists’ very own legal representative in Israel and worldwide, Attorney Gur Finkelstein, who stood to benefited from the future reconstruction work, due to a close connection with the building contractors.

Police said that the suspects – including the Nizar Bakher, the Bakher family patriarch and his son Abdullah, as well as Finkelstein himself – have admitted their involvement. The Tel Aviv District Prosecution is expected to file formal indictments in the case later in the week.

“This is a dangerous group of people whose victims were saved by a miracle,” the Tel Aviv Police said. “They prepared explosive devices that could have flattened buildings let alone the consequences of the Mosque plan should it have succeeded. We prevented a huge catastrophe,” the police said.

U.S. accuses Syria of inciting Israel border clashes

Lebanese delegation files complaint at UN after 10 people killed in border clashes; Zionist delegation plans to follow suit, with complaints against both Syria and Lebanon.

The White House on Monday accused Syria of inciting deadly border clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinian demonstrators, saying Damascus was trying to distract attention from its own violent crackdown on protests.

White House spokesman Jay Carney expressed regret for the loss of life in confrontations on Israel’s frontiers with Syria, Lebanon and Gaza on Sunday but said Israel “has the right to prevent unauthorized crossing at its borders.”

“We urge maximum restraint on all sides,” Carney told reporters on Air Force One as President Barack Obama flew to Tennessee.

Israeli troops opened fire at three separate border locations to prevent crowds of demonstrators from crossing, killing at least 13 people.

Syrian media reports said Israeli gunfire killed two people after dozens of Palestinians infiltrated the Golan Heights from Syria, along a front line that has been largely tranquil for decades.

The White House put the onus on the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the violence that broke out on the Israeli-Syrian border.

Carney said the administration was “strongly opposed to the Syrian government’s involvement in inciting yesterday’s protests in the Golan Heights.”

“Such behavior is unacceptable and does not serve as a distraction from the Syrian government’s ongoing repression of demonstrators in its own country,” he said.

“It seems apparent to us that this is an effort to distract attention from the legitimate expressions of protest by the Syrian people, and from the harsh crackdown that the Syrian government has perpetrated against its own people,” he added.

The Obama administration has tightened sanctions on senior Syrian officials to try to pressure Damascus to halt its crackdown on pro-democracy protests, but international human rights groups have criticized Washington for not taking stronger action.

Some Israeli officials suspect an Iranian hand in the attempted border breaches, with the help of Tehran’s allies in the region: Syria, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza.

The Israeli delegation to the United Nations announced Monday that it would file a complaint to the UN Security Council against Syria and Lebanon regarding the Nakba Day border clashes.

The Lebanese delegation to the UN filed a complaint against Israel over the clashes, after the Lebanese army said that 10 people were killed and 112 were wounded in Maroun a-Ras when IDF troops opened fire on demonstrators trying to cross the border.

IDF sources said, however, that both Israeli and Lebanese forces opened fire to prevent demonstrators from crossing the border.

Israeli security forces were on alert for more violence on Monday, fearing that the events of the day prior may be serve as a model for additional violence aimed toward Israel and trigger further protests for Palestinian refugees.

Ab-A$$ urges UN: Recognize Palestinian state, pave way for legal action against IsraHell

In a New York Times op-ed, Palestinian President says a UN move to authorize an independent Palestinian state come September would rectify what he calls the ‘unfulfilled’ 1947 UN partition plan.

United Nations member states should support the move to declare Palestinian independence in September of this year, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas wrote in a New York Times op-ed on Tuesday, adding that such a move would also allow the Palestinians to pursue their claims against Israel.

By recognizing a Palestinian state, Abbas wrote, “the United Nations would pave the way for the internationalization of the conflict as a legal matter, not only a political one.”

“It would also pave the way for us to pursue claims against Israel at the United Nations, human rights treaty bodies and the International Court of Justice,” he added, saying that the Palestinians were going to the UN “to secure the right to live free in the remaining 22 percent of our historic homeland because we have been negotiating with the State of Israel for 20 years without coming any closer to realizing a state of our own.”

“We cannot wait indefinitely while Israel continues to send more settlers to the occupied West Bank and denies Palestinians access to most of our land and holy places, particularly in Jerusalem,” he wrote in the New York times, adding that “neither political pressure nor promises of rewards by the United States have stopped Israel’s settlement program.”

In his article, the Palestinian president, and future head of the joint Fatah-Hamas cabinet, also described his view that the Palestinians had been devoid of national independence as a result of a historical mistake, what he characterizes as a neglected leftover of the 1947 partition agreement.

“It is important to note,” Abbas wrote of the Palestinian move for statehood in the UNGA this coming September, “that the last time the question of Palestinian statehood took center stage at the General Assembly, the question posed to the international community was whether our homeland should be partitioned into two states.”

“In November 1947, the General Assembly made its recommendation and answered in the affirmative. Shortly thereafter, Zionist forces expelled Palestinian Arabs to ensure a decisive Jewish majority in the future state of Israel, and Arab armies intervened. War and further expulsions ensued,” Abbas added.

Linking those events with violent Nakba Day protests earlier this week, the Palestinian president indicated that “the descendants of these expelled Palestinians who were shot and wounded by Israeli forces on Sunday as they tried to symbolically exercise their right to return to their families’ homes.”

“Minutes after the State of Israel was established on May 14, 1948, the United States granted it recognition,” Abbas wrote in the New York Times, adding: “Our Palestinian state, however, remains a promise unfulfilled.”

Returning to the issue of stalled peace talks, the Palestinian president wrote that negotiations remained “our first option, but due to their failure we are now compelled to turn to the international community to assist us in preserving the opportunity for a peaceful and just end to the conflict.”

“Palestinian national unity is a key step in this regard. Contrary to what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel asserts, and can be expected to repeat this week during his visit to Washington, the choice is not between Palestinian unity or peace with Israel; it is between a two-state solution or settlement-colonies,” he added.

Concluding his article, the Palestinian president called on “all friendly, peace-loving nations to join us in realizing our national aspirations by recognizing the State of Palestine on the 1967 border and by supporting its admission to the United Nations.”

“Only if the international community keeps the promise it made to us six decades ago, and ensures that a just resolution for Palestinian refugees is put into effect, can there be a future of hope and dignity for our people,” he wrote.

The Israeli Navy attacked the MV Finch, an aid vessel bound for the Gaza Strip today, preventing the vessel from delivering a supply of plastic sewage pipes to the besieged enclave and forcing it to flee to Egypt.
The ship was a Moldovan-flagged ship carrying aid from Malaysia. Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad was on board at the time of the incident. No one was reported injured.
The exact circumstances, however, appear to be in dispute, even internally among Israeli officials. IDF spokesmen initially said the navy fired on the ship to keep it away from Gaza, but the Israeli Navy later denied that any shots were fired.
Journalists on board the ship confirmed that shots were fired, but none hit the vessel. Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh condemned the attack as “piracy.” The Israeli government has blockaded Gaza for years, barring broad types of humanitarian and construction aid as “dual use.”
