Waging War at Home and Abroad While Pledging Peace
NOVANEWS
by Stephen Lendman
Promising peace on May 19, Obama wages war against Middle East/North African and Central Asian states, as well as Muslim Americans at home. Earlier articles explained they’ve:
-
been targeted;
-
hunted down;
-
bogusly entrapped by stings, false evidence or other means;
-
rounded up;
-
held in detention;
-
kept in isolation;
-
denied bail;
-
restricted in their right to counsel;
-
tried on secret evidence;
-
convicted on bogus charges;
-
given long sentences; and
-
incarcerated for extra harsh treatment as political prisoners in supermax confinement or segregated Communication Management Units (CMUs).
In fact, they violate US Prison Bureau regulations, stipulating that “staff shall not discriminate against inmates on the basis of race, religion, national origin, sex, disability, or political belief (including) administrative decisions (involving) access to work, housing and programs.”
Moreover, the Supreme Court’s February 2005 Johnson V. California decision prohibited segregating prisoners by race, national origin, or language, citing 14th Amendment protections against racial discrimination.
Nonetheless, post-9/11, Muslims have been vilified for their faith, ethnicity, activism, prominence, and, in the case of the Holy Land Foundation, charity. Bogusly, however, they were called a terrorist group and shut down, its principles given long prison terms for providing legitimate financial and other assistance, not aid to global terror groups.
Imam Amin Abdul Latif understands well. Recently, without explanation, he was removed from a plane with his son, also an Iman, despite having cleared security. Angrily he responded:
“I’ve never experienced anything like that before, that level of humiliation and disrespect. Never in my life! As an American citizen, you expect more. The whole idea of freedom of religion – that’s what we pride ourselves over. As Americans, we pride ourselves! Now, we (no longer can) take pride. You single out a group of people (for their faith). This is just horrible.”
Ironically, he and his son were headed for an Islamophobia conference.
More serious are bogus indictments, charging innocent men and women with terrorism, conspiracy to commit it, and related offenses. Two Queens, NY men, both Muslims, are likely victims, Ahmed Ferhani and Mohammed Mamdou, charged with planning to bomb synagogues in Manhattan.
On May 12, New York Times writers William Rashbaum and Al Baker headlined, “Suspects in Terror Case Wanted to Kill Jews, Officials Say,” both writers implying prosecutorial credibility by their inflammatory headline, saying:
According to New York police commissioner Raymond Kelly, their ambitions didn’t end there, expressing an interest also “in blowing up the Empire State Building.”
Earlier, innocent men and women were charged with alleged plots against various New York landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street, Times Square, Kennedy Airport, and the Empire State Building.
Others were falsely accused of plots against US soldiers at Fort Dix, NJ, marines at Quantico, VA, National Guard jets with stinger missiles, Pakistan’s ambassador with a surface-to-air missile, an armed forces recruiting station, and other just as preposterous targets. All charges were bogus. Some, in fact, were dropped from indictments. All were to stoke fear and enlist public support for the fake war on terror, filling prison cells with innocent Muslims to do it.
On May 13, Ferhani and Mamdou were arraigned before Judge Melissa C. Jackson in Manhattan’s State Supreme Court on conspiracy, hate crimes, weapons possession, and terrorism. According to prosecutor Margaret Gandy:
“The seriousness of this crime is considerable,” adding that investigators had convincing, undisclosed evidence. Both men were held without bail. Neither one entered a formal plea, but lawyers said their clients denied wrongdoing.
The previous day, at a City Hall press conference, commissioner Kelly, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. said both men wanted to kill Jews and considered blowing up churches.
Of course, authorities will say anything to incite fear and get convictions, leaving no one safe in today’s environment, no matter how pristine pure.
According to Vance:
“They conspired and took concrete steps to blow up synagogues and churches to advance (their) ideological goals and to possess and use illegal firearms and explosives. They did it for jihad, something they referred simply to as the cause, which meant the violence and armed fight against Israel, Jews and other non-Muslims and the West….He was committed to violent jihad, and his plans became bigger and more violent with each passing week.”
However, according to Ferhani’s father, his son was falsely accused, saying:
“He’s a very good kid….He has a very good heart, but if somebody tries tries to tell him something, he always believes it.” As for the charges, he added: “Bomb a synagogue? That’s not my son….he’s not a religious fanatic.”
A seven-month long New York city police sting, in fact, entrapped the men. This occurs when law enforcement officials or agents induce, influence, or provoke crimes that otherwise wouldn’t be committed. However, it doesn’t apply in cases of willingness to act lawlessly, government merely aiding, abetting, or facilitating a good chance to do so.
Entrapment involves the following:
-
government officials or agents initiated the idea;
-
individuals were persuaded to act; and
-
they had no previous intent or willingness to do so.
Key is that prosecutors must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that subjects weren’t entrapped. Otherwise, due process convictions are prohibited, though judicial fairness seldom occurs in cases involving anyone for political reasons, especially Muslims.
If convicted, Ferhani and Mamdou face potential life sentences, most likely on false charges.
FBI Charges Six South Florida Muslims
On May 14, New York Times writer Dan Van Natta headlined, “Florida Men Accused of Supporting Pakistani Taliban,” saying:
“Six people, including two Imams at South Florida mosques, have been indicted on federal charges of providing financial support and encouraging violence by the Pakistani Taliban, the United States attorney here announced Saturday.”
Charged were Hafiz Mumammed Sher Ali Khan, an elderly Miami Mosque Imam, known as the Flagler Mosque, Miami’s oldest. Others accused included:
-
Izhar Khan, Mumammed’s son, an Imam at Margate, FL’s Jamaat Al-Mumineen Mosque
-
Irfan Khan, another son;
-
Ali Rehman (aka Faisal Ali Rehman);
-
Alam Zeb; and
-
Amina Khan (Amina Bibi).
Rehman, Zeb, and Amina Khan reside in Pakistan. The others are in South Florida. Amina is Mumammed’s daughter. Alam is his grandson.
Another son, Ikram, called the arrests “ridiculous,” saying:
“They can do anything they want in America. They want to scare more people.”
Accused of providing material support to a terrorist organization, the Taliban, Ikram explained that his father sent money to a Pakistan madrasa (a school) for charitable purposes only, adding:
“It only does good things for people, and it only does the right thing….None of my family supports the Taliban. We support this country.”
According to Rafiq Mahdi, a Fort Lauderdale, FL Imam:
“I have not heard anything or know anything that would lead me to think” these charges are legitimate. “I think as Imams here in the United States, we are keenly aware of the scrutiny that we are receiving. We have a big job to combat the prejudice that has been focused on Islam and Muslims in this country. We have to be careful,” as a result.
There are “many of our immigrant brothers who (may) be sending money to family members for charitable purposes and that can possibly be misconstrued.”
In other words, six more Muslims were falsely accused of what they didn’t do and don’t support. Nonetheless, on May 14, a Department of Justice press release headlined, “Six Individuals Charged for Providing Material Support to the Pakistani Taliban,” saying:
The four-count indictment charged all six “defendants (with) conspiring to provide and providing material support to a conspiracy to murder, maim, and kidnap persons overseas, as well as conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, specifically the Pakistani Taliban.”
Two individuals were arrested in South Florida, another in Los Angeles. The others are at large in Pakistan. All are Pakistani natives.
According to US Attorney Wilfredo Ferrer:
“Despite being an Imam, or spiritual leader, Hafiz Khan was by no means a man of peace,” though no evidence corroborates DOJ charges against any of those accused.
In later 2008, US banks noticed financial transactions to Pakistan accounts. The FBI was notified. Supposedly they wiretapped phone conversations about transferring funds to Pakistani insurgents for planned assaults against US interests there and in Afghanistan.
Since 9/11, hundreds of innocent Muslims have been bogusly accused of other terror plots, including conspiring with overseas terrorists.
After pleading innocent at a May 16 Federal District Court hearing, Hafiz Muhammed Sher Ali Khan’s lawyer, Khurrum Wahid, asked community members not to prejudge his client, saying:
“The public may have preconceived notions. I would ask the public to keep an open mind, and remember that everyone is innocent until proven guilty in this country.”
Moreover, Khan family relatives and friends asserted that all money sent to Pakistan was to help indigent people as well as to provide charitable support for a madrasa.
According to Fort Laudedale lawyer Victor Comras:
“The key difficulty in prosecuting (these type) cases is proving that the contribution was made ‘knowingly’ ” for purposes other than those claimed. In previous cases, he explained, prosecutors have struggled to prove intent without clear evidence.
However, prosecutors often manipulate alleged evidence to convince juries of terrorist connections and intent. Secret evidence is also used. As a result, innocent victims are wrongfully charged and convicted.
In a post-9/11 climate of fear, it’s the wrong time to be Muslim in America. As a result, federal prisons are filled with them for political advantage, not for alleged wrongdoing.
Obama Teaches Us Why Voting is a Fraud
NOVANEWS
by Bob Johnson
Americans are programmed by everything from the “education” system to the nightly news to MTV that voting is important. In just two speeches Barrack Obama has exposed the lie in this false belief.
On Thursday, May 19, 2011 politician Obama gave a speech at the State Department in which he made it appear he wanted Israel to return to its 1967 borders as a way to further the failed decades old peace process in the Middle East. He played down the part that the borders could be adjusted to some degree.
Three days latter he gave a speech at the convention of the overly powerful American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the key lobby group of the Israeli lobby. In his AIPAC speech he made it clear his previous mention of Israel returning to the 1967 border was virtually meaningless.
He indirectly assured his Israel over all audience that his words Thursday would not hinder Israel’s expansion into a Greater Israel at the continued expense of the Palestinian people by saying and by stressing (I wouldn’t be surprised if he employed something similar to Monty Python’s “wink-wink-nod-nod”) that he stipulated there would be negotiations regarding land swaps between Israel and the Palestinians. He said the two sides, “will negotiate a border that is different than the one that existed on June 4, 1967.” Knowing full well what Obama meant, the throng of Zionists gave a rapturous applause. Of course, this is just more of the same that has been going on since 1967.
It seems Obama has Israel’s best interests at heart to the point of being willing to take some political heat for the benefit of the Jewish state. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair made it clear the reason Obama mentioned the 1967 borders had nothing to do with ending the violence in the region or to establish a Palestinian homeland.
The real reason was to help Israel by tricking the Palestinians into coming back to the endlessly nonproductive peace talks instead of going to the United Nations in September and declaring a Palestinian state. Obama knows, as all politicians know, that talk is the cheapest thing in the world. By keeping the Palestinians at the table talking, no action will be taken and the status-quo of Israel stealing land from the Palestinians will continue on.
To further cement Jewish support he pointed out to the AIPAC crowd that despite Americans suffering through the worst financial catastrophe since the last economic depression in the 1930s, he, Obama, requested and received over $200 million US tax dollars and gave it to Israel for its development and building of the anti-rocket system Iron Dome. This is in addition to the well over $3 BILLION US politicians take from American tax payers every year and give to Israel.
If we had an honest media made up of journalists instead of careerists, this attack on the American people would have been front page news. Instead we get nothing from our “free press.” As Henry Mencken said, “Freedom of the press is limited to those who own one.” Hopefully, the Internet will help correct this critical problem.
Obama’s duplicity in just these two speeches makes it very, very obvious to any objective thinking person that voting is a complete and utter waste of time. It is not only a waste of time and energy, it is morally wrong because it encourages charlatans and political whores like Obama to continue the deadly scam. When people are foolish enough to vote they’re sending a strong message to the crooked politicians that they are buying their lies and deceptions and that they in fact want more of the same.
Not only does voting encourage the thieves and con-artists in politics and allows them to continue their unnecessary wars and destruction and thievery of the people, it gives sincere people who actually vote the false belief that they can correct the monumental problems facing us and our children and grandchildren today by merely voting. They don’t realize it’s the machine itself, which they are making themselves a part of by playing its game and voting, which needs to come down.
Voting today is akin to those delegates at the Continental Congress who argued for more dialogue with their government instead of following the beliefs of the revolutionaries who knew talk and any form of working within the corrupt system was wrong and a waste of time.
The Media’s Role in the War on Terror
NOVANEWS
by Mike Stathis
The media continues to utilize countless tactics designed to heighten public perception regarding the critical need to advance America’s war on terror. We see this on a daily basis. Often, the media states bold-faced lies regarding so-called terrorist activities, so as to enrage Americans. Other times the media stages complete fabrications of events so as to twist reality in order to advance the agenda of Washington. Many alert, independent-minded Americans; a group representing a dying breed – are aware of this. Others suspect it.
There are many other less conscious methods used by the media to achieve its directives, as dictated by Washington. Here, I show you some examples.
Previously I discussed how the media used bin Laden’s porn collection as a way to expand the myth that bin Laden was responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Centers. It’s a simple tactic. The more details one hears about someone alleged to have committed a crime, the more they associate the person with the crime despite evidence to the contrary.
Last year, you might remember plans by a tiny Church in Florida to burn the Qur’an on the ninth anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks. The man in charge of this ridiculous spectacle, Reverend Terry Jones received massive media exposure from America’s media monopoly.
Now I want you to pause for a minute and ask yourself the following question.
Didn’t it seem strange how such a small group was able to obtain instant worldwide media exposure?
After all, the church only had about 50 members.
And it wasn’t as if Jones had much credibility either. For instance, although Jones refers to himself as a reverend or pastor, he offered no evidence that he has been
ordained by any legitimate religious group. I suppose religious freedom allows anyone to form their own church and call oneself a reverend.
Moreover, Jones calls himself a “Dr.,” claiming he has a Ph.D in Theology from the California Graduate School of Theology. However, the college stated Jones has never attended a single course there.
Even his daughter had (allegedly) gone on record claiming that she left his church because she viewed it as a cult, with a profit incentive more than anything else.
Finally, the State of Florida discovered Jones was running his online furniture store on church property, which is illegal since the church claims a tax-exempt status.
Given these facts about Jones, doesn’t it seem odd how the media flocked to him as if he were Osama bin Laden?
Thus, it becomes important to ascertain whether the media even conducts a reasonable amount of due diligence prior to interviewing individuals. As you might imagine, the media has no interest in the credibility of its sources. The media only cares to carry out the agendas of its masters; Washington and corporate America.
In summary, Jones has no significant following, no credibility, a shady past, has used tax-exempt status illegally, his own daughter even abandoned his church, and has been alleged to have stolen funds from his previous church for his own personal use.
I’m willing to bet that Jones has never even read the Qur’an.
So why would the media waste time on this man?
Perhaps a better question is this. What could possibly be gained by the media highlighting this man and his plans to burn the Qur’an?
Certain individuals, regardless how trivial, ignorant, insane or criminal are provided with mass media exposure for a very good reason. Sometimes they are used as objects to create drama so as to attract an audience which that can sell commercials to. Other times they are used as tools to control your mind.
The media has two main objectives. The first is obvious. Because the media receives the vast majority of revenues from commercials, ads and other forms of sponsorships, clearly the media always seeks to generate drama in order to attract a large audience. This objective leverages the media’s strong relationships with corporate America.
The second main objective of the media is to manipulate public discourse. This objective leverages the media’s strong relationships with Washington DC.
This begs the question; was Jones used by the media to create drama as a way to sell commercials; or as a stool pigeon in order to manipulate public thought?
The answer is both. However, in this instance, I feel that the Washington relationship took precedence. After all, don’t you find it strange that Attorney General Eric Holder, General Petraeus, and several other high-level Washington officials responded to Jones’ planned Qur’an-burning event?
Remember, Jones has a following of only 50 people. So why would high-level officials spend even of minute of their time on this circus show?
Don’t you think that if Washington viewed the mass media exposure provided to Jones as some type of threat (as Petraeus claimed) they could easily get the media crime bosses to pull the plug on Jones?
Of course they could.
The situation is similar to Wikileaks, an obvious PSYOP.
I haven’t said much about Wikileaks in the past because once I spot a fraud, I announce it and move on. Here is an excerpt from an article I wrote in 2010…
“WikiLeaks is trying to establish credibility by supplying the public with basically useless information positioned as closely guarded secrets. However, nothing released by WikiLeaks has been valuable or insightful.
This is a pretty standard tactic used to lure sheep. Here is how it works. First, you establish credibility by revealing something that has been positioned as “insider information” or by making a case for something by presenting verifiable facts. Thereafter, the individual expands upon previously verified information and either twists the truth to fit his agendas, or else makes up things. This usually works because the followers have drunk so much of the Kool-Aid, they have become sheep willing to believe anything from their highly trusted source.
It’s quite funny to see that WikiLeaks has already fooled many hackers who actually think WikiLeaks is on their side. This is how you get people to do your dirty work. The Republican Party also did the same thing to the Tea Party.
First, consider that if WikiLeaks truly released important information that threatened anything, the media would stay away from it. Instead, the media has been all over it. Don’t you find that odd? Don’t forget that the media first and foremost would never do anything to jeopardize Washington secrets. This is why 9-11 was covered up and this is why CIA agents are working as journalists and executives in various media firms throughout the U.S. and perhaps much of the developed world. I’d like to remind you of Operation Mockingbird.
Second, just look at what WikiLeaks has released. It’s been noise; nothing insightful. However, with the help of the media, the material released has been positioned as critical. Washington has played its role as well, stating how damaging the material could be.
Third, in its most recent release, WikiLeaks claimed that it would be releasing documents about Bank of America. Okay so what? We already know about the scam operations involved with BAC, MER and CountryWide. These documents will most likely dramatize what we already know. Ask yourself why WikiLeaks isn’t going after the big fraud by banks like Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan. I’ll tell you why. Because the idea is to create the perception that WikiLeaks is uncovering valuable information. The idea is NOT to actually uncover valuable information.
Now I don’t know for certain who is behind WikiLeaks, but I will guarantee you it’s not Julian Assange. If it’s not individuals connected to Washington, then my guess is that it’s Zionists or individuals like Soros.”
Okay, so back to Jones. Many of the methods of mind control practiced by the media utilize primitive psychological tactics.
Based on my analysis, the media seized upon Jones’ intent to burn the Qur’an as a manner by which to fuel more anti-Semitic behavior in America; not against Jews, but against Arabs.
Don’t you find it more than strange that any mention of Jews or Israel in a manner that does not praise them is considered anti-Semitic, yet it’s perfectly acceptable to call Arabs terrorists and other names that degrade their character and not be labeled an anti-Semite?
As the facts demonstrate, a much higher percentage of Arabic people are of Semitic origin than Jews or Israelis.
Moreover, Israel is just as much of a terrorist state (if not more) than its neighbors in the Middle East. For example, consider the events in Gaza, Mossad’s involvement in the World Trade Center Bombings (both on September 11, 2001 and 1993), the bombing of the USS Liberty, and spying activities by several Zionists in Washingtoon, the ADL and many other Jewish organizations.
It is clear to me why Jones was able to gain such widespread media attention. While the media joined politicians in condemning this atrocity, the massive publicity provided to Jones served as a cover for the real objective of the media; to add support for hatred of Muslims.
In addition, the publicity event was designed by the media in order to increase friction between the U.S. and Islam. Massive exposure discussing Jones’ book-burning event increases the chance of acts of terror in the U.S. by radical Islamic youths. Thus, by providing media exposure to Jones, it directly and indirectly adds support in the U.S. to continue war in the Middle East.
The effect is similar to media coverage of say a school shooting which results more school shootings, as nut-jobs are pushed over the edge knowing they will receive widespread media attention, thereby increasing the magnitude and impact of their acts of brutal murder and insanity. In this case, the media does not air the catastrophe in order to spur more shootings. It should be obvious that reporting these tragic events is to be expected.
But there was absolutely no justification in providing Jones with any media exposure whatsoever. If someone like Joel Osteen were to announce plans to burn the Qur’an, mass media exposure might be justified due to millions who follow and support him. But remember, Jones’ church had only 50 members.
Recall that several months earlier, plans to erect a Mosque near ground zero began receiving a huge amount of media coverage. This also had a hidden agenda. Think about it for a minute. If you were an Islamic leader, and if Islamic terrorists were in fact responsible for the attacks on 9-11, why would you add to the fire with plans to erect a Mosque near Ground Zero? It simply makes no sense if you care about your people.
By moving forward with this development, Americans become even more outraged at the irony of the situation, given that most Americans have been fooled to think that Osama bin Laden and other Muslims carried out the attacks on the World Trade Center. In effect, it helps galvanize the belief that radical Islam was responsible for the attacks on 9-11. It’s a perfect case of complete manipulation of the American people.
Once Washington sends the official story line to the media to broadcast to the people, any alternative ideas offered are always labeled as conspiracies. Others are labeled as quacks, racists, bigots or anti-Semites. Instead of addressing the issues, the media is quick to defame individuals who present viewpoints counter to those supplied to the media by Washington. This tactic has become stale and ineffective.
I have my own ideas about the genesis of the proposed Mosque. In my opinion, one or more individuals who have been disguised as Muslims spearheaded these plans as a manner by which to stir more outrage from the American public. Doing so adds strength to the false sentiment that Muslims were behind this attack, despite inadequate evidence. Think of it as a smoke screen. I’m not going on record stating that this is a fact because I don’t have the evidence. I’m going by logic. Whatever the case may be, there’s something very fishy about the deal.
We see similar smoke screens that have been propagated by neocon media personalities, so as claims of Obama being a Muslim. Let me be clear. This claim has been disseminated in order to diminish or refute any criticism that Obama is in fact controlled by Zionist Jews.
While Obama might be a Muslim in theory, all that matters are his actions. If we examine Obama’s most trusted advisers, we do not see a single Muslim or even Christian Arab. If we examine the heads of the most important government agencies, we do not see any Muslims. We only see Zionist Jews.
If we examine Obama’s advisers on Middle East policy, we see not one single Muslim or Christian Arab. We only see Zionist Jews and other Zionists. You might recall the fact that George Bush included only Zionist Jews to on his Middle East advisory committee. This is by no coincidence. Regardless, who is in the White House, regardless what they say in front of the camera, one thing is for certain. America is being run by Zionist Jews, as it has been for decades. And the U.S. continues to spend trillions of dollars to fight wars to advance Israel’s directives at the expense of weakening America’s international standing and economy.
But alas, the plot thickens. It would appear that Jones actually identified Jews as a threat to Christianity, and had previously announced that he planned to also burn copies of the Talmud along with the Qur’an during aninterview with the Ugly Truth.
During the interview, “when (Jones) was pressed to describe the real groups, persons and agendas behind the de-Christianizing of America and the subversion of her moral, political and cultural moorings, he admitted that the extremists directing the controlled demolition of American society were not Islamic in character, but rather Jewish.”
After being contacted by several journalists about his intentions to burn the Talmud, Jones allegedly announced that he had changed his mind.
Podcast of Jones’ interview with the Ugly Truth
It is clear to me that if Mr. Jones was planning to burn the Talmud in protest to the attacks on 9-11, he would surely be labeled a terrorist group by the FBI and CIA, because of course, these agencies are largely under the control of the Zionist Jewish mafia.
While Jones decided not to move forward with his book-burning event, at that point it really didn’t matter because the media had already accomplished its objective.
Without any surprise, shortly after Jones’ book-burning promotion, rumors began to circulate that he was arrested for possession of child pornography. It’s gotten to the point that whenever someone is accused of passion of child pornography, there appears to be a set up by government officials as a way to discredit the individual.
Although I have not spent sufficient time researching whether or not he was in fact arrested for passion of child pornography, I find it odd that the story from NBC cannot be accessed. Perhaps it was retracted after it was proven to be false. Given how irresponsible the media is, I wouldn’t be surprised if in fact this was the case.
People should never allow the media determine what is or is not true because the media is merely a tool for manipulation and financial gain. The only way to find out the truth is to research things with an open mind. Of course, most people simply do not have the time required to research things for themselves. But everyone should make the time to research the big things, like 9-11.
Others may not have adequate experience analyzing things to the extent they are able to exercise good judgment. For those who fall into this category, I would suggest that you identify one or more individuals who have demonstrated a track record of credibility with no agendas. This is a very difficult task requiring extensive research in itself. In the end, on any given day, you are not likely to locate a source that is 100% correct about everything. This points to the problem of understanding to what extent to utilize each of your sources.
Be careful, because there are countless frauds out there. The more you understand what is going on around you, the more easily you will be able to spot the frauds.
During his massive PR exposure, the media made reference on many occasions to a book written by Jones. I am quite certain that many Americans bought his book
because they have been programmed to act on impulse, feeling the need to be fed more BS by media celebrities. Others bought the book it in support of his misguided hatred towards Muslims. Any way you look at it, Jones profited from the event without ever even burning the Qur’an.
Jones’ immediate and unwarranted rise to fame last year is similar to that enjoyed by Octomom, Paris Hilton, Joe the Plumber and countless others who have been publicized by the media. Octomom got an endorsement deal from PETA. Paris Hilton made millions for doing nothing. And Joe the Plumber got a book deal. But the big winner in each case has always been the media and the agendas they have been paid to represent.
Interestingly, Jones recently announced that he planned to burn the Qur’an. Last month, according to reports, this time he went through with his promise perhaps as an attempt to replicate the media exposure he received the previous year.
Welcome to America’s manipulative media monopoly, rewarding liars, crooks and hacks with massive publicity in order to execute its agendas, while censoring unbiased experts seeking to communicate the truth.
Arizona Cops Blast Marine Veteran to Death on Bad Info
NOVANEWS
Not Allowed to Live…
by Tim King – Salem-News.com
(TUCSON, Ariz.) – Having survived two tours in Iraq, Marine combat veteran Jose Guereña in Arizona was gunned down in front of his family, inside of his own home, by the Pima Regional SWAT team earlier this month. They fired 71 rounds in seven seconds, striking him 60 times.
Then, to add insult to injury, the deputies under the command of Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, blocked paramedics from approaching the scene for well over an hour, and of course that cut off any chance of Guereña surviving.
After all, it was only 60 police rounds that struck him, certainly the man was still dangerous.
Jose’s wife, Vanessa Guereña, told reporters with KGUN Channel 9, “I was going to touch Jose because he was [moaning],” she said. “And I saw his stomach, and all the blood on the floor.”
Officers did say that he drew a weapon and shot at them, and that was the only reason for “returning” fire on Mr. Guereña, which many people could understand, as that equates to self-defense.
YouTube – Veterans Today –
But then it was discovered that this Marine veteran actually didn’t fire; he never took his weapon off safety, probably because he realized they were police. Marines are the best riflemen in the world and their mistake ratio in combat is lower than other military combatants in the world.

Working Man
On this fateful day of 5 May, 2011, Jose had worked the graveyard shift at Asarco Mission mine. When everything went mad, about 9:30 a.m., this sleeping father only had time to hide his family. Based on what his wife told him, he only knew at first that he had ‘men with guns’ in his house. Thank God his wife and little son survived.
The police said he fired at them, then Deputy Erin Gibson with the Pima Sheriff’s Department said, “Guerena did have a gun in his hand and pointed it at the officers, but he did not fire it.” The police said he was a drug dealer, but they sealed the search warrant. In fact they found no evidence of drugs in his home. Then they changed their story again, and said he was a suspect in home invasion robberies. Arizona’s Pima County clearly needs federal intervention.
New America Media wrote:
The explanation by the Pima County Sheriff’s office for the home invasion has changed since the May 5 shooting. First reports by the Sheriff’s office were that the SWAT team’s mission was to break up a suspected drug ring and that Jose fired his weapon before the SWAT team fired back. That story was later reversed when it was discovered the safety on Jose’s AR-15 was still locked.
The Guereña family before Pima County got to them: Semper fi Brother
The motive for the SWAT team’s mission was then changed by the Sheriff’s office, which now says that “someone in the home” had been suspected of a connection with a home invasion robbery ring. The search warrant and court documents that would reveal what the SWAT team was looking for in Guerena’s home have been sealed by a judge and are unavailable to the public.
No drugs, cash or criminal evidence of any kind were found in the home. Neither Jose nor his wife Vanessa has a criminal record. In an attempt to discredit Guerena’s character, a lawyer for the AZCOPS law-enforcement union, Michael Storie, told the media that rifles, handguns, body armor and a portion of a law-enforcement uniform were found inside the house where Jose Guerena was shot. However, Storie was forced to admit that if SWAT members had entered the home without incident, those inside “probably … wouldn’t have been arrested.”
Brass Tacks
U.S. Marine Widow Vanessa Guereña
Now the police have been fully exposed, but will it matter? Is it not just one more case of an innocent man fighting for his country, only to be slain by ‘legal’ quick on the trigger thugs with badges?
This isn’t even like the others we have reported in the past, where veterans with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) went into a rage, often involving alcohol, and ended up dying in a gun battle. This one is far worse than anything I have personally ever heard of, with regard to the rampant number of police shootings we have reported.
I am horrified after reading about the tragic police SWAT (Strategic weapons and tactics) shooting death of this U.S. Marine Veteran whose biggest ‘crime’ appears to be the fact that he was Hispanic and falsely accused of being a drug dealer. Would the agency have handled it differently if the man’s name was not Hispanic?
Here is what News 13 in Tucson wrote: Vanessa Guerena was in her son’s room, she says, when she saw a man outside pointing a gun at her.
“I was yelling ‘Jose, Jose, somebody’s here. Wake up, wake up!’ so he can hear because the door was closed.”
26-year-old Jose Guerena, a Tucson native and former Marine, jumped up and asked what was wrong. When his wife told him, he grabbed an assault rifle and told her to stay in their son’s room.
“The only thing he told me, the last thing he told me – Vani, go into the closet with the kid. Go!”
So that’s what she did with their 4-year-old son.
It was the last time she saw her husband of nearly nine years alive.

The story sounds like something you might hear coming out of Palestine, where the slaughter of human beings is always casually dismissed, and ambulance drivers are frequently blocked from accessing dying patients, but instead it is right here in the USA; cops slaughtering combat veterans over bad information, lying about it, getting caught, changing their story, on and on.
And will any of these cops pay for their crime?
No.
It will be ‘justified’ no matter what, that is because review boards are a joke. (Please don’t take my criticism of Israel as ‘anti-semitism’ because Salem-News.com fights for and is critical of all oppressive governments at all times. Israeli criticism is exactly that; objections to the behavior of a government, not a religion.)
Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik infamously stated last January, that Arizona is a “Mecca for prejudice and bigotry.” That agency and all who operate like it, need a major overhaul in policy before its too late. People have been losing faith in law enforcement for some time, but events like this are a turbocharger of sentiment. It’s too bad for the good cops out there trying to weather the storm with a semblance of decency. It must be tough.
As published by The Arizona Daily Star: Why were search warrants sealed after the shooting, and was that done according to legal procedures? It’s easy to second-guess actions taken in a split second. But a man was killed at the hand of law enforcement officers and the circumstances surrounding the shooting raise serious questions about what happened.
None of us should ever forget about U.S. Marine veteran Jose Guereña, whose life was violently blasted to shreds because deputies with Pima County had “bad information” and were brutal, not thoughtful, with regard to public safety, their ultimate responsibility.
“This is in memory of former Marine Jose Guerena. He was shot over 60 times on May 5th, 2011, by the pathetic Pima County, AZ. SWAT Team during a botched Pot raid. He leaves behind a wife and two sons’ ages four and six. End The Drug War! Stop The Police State!”

Zio-Nazi Gestapo's abduct 12 Palestinians
NOVANEWS

Zio-Nazi Gestapo’s have abducted 12 Palestinians, including two women, overnight during raids on six villages near the northern West Bank town of Jenin.
Zio-Nazi Gestapo officer said in a statement on Tuesday that the detainees were senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad activists, Ma’an news agency reported.
The Zio-Nazi Gestapo has also ordered the closure of Palestinian charity Al Bara’a, claiming its operations harm Zio-Nazi, according to the statement.
Palestinian security officials said Arraba, Kafr Ra’i, Jaba, Az-Zababida, Anin and Silat Al-Harithiya villages were raided.
Islamic Jihad said Nazi soldiers tried to detain the movement’s leader Khadir Adnan overnight, but he was not at home at the time of the attack.
Meanwhile, Palestinian security sources said soldiers ransacked the offices of the Palestinian People’s Party and offices of the Islamic Relief Society as well as several other offices in the Al Bureiki building in the center of Jenin.
NATO airstrike kills 11 civilians in Libya
NOVANEWS

NATO warplanes have dropped bombs on a key Libyan town, killing at least eleven civilians and wounding several others, Libyan sources say.
Libya’s state television said on Monday that the airstrike targeted Zlitan, west of the city of Misratah.
NATO has conducted hundreds of sorties over Libya since it assumed control of a military campaign to impose a no-fly zone over the country and save civilian lives in late March.
The US and NATO have unleashed a punishing, UN-mandated offensive against Colonel Muammar Gaddafi to pressure him into giving up power.
However, the airstrikes by the military alliance have killed dozens of civilians as well as revolutionary fighters.
Libya has been the scene of fierce fighting between Pro-Gaddafi troops and anti-regime forces since mid-February.
Revolutionary forces want an end to Gaddafi’s decades-long rule.
Experts say the main motive behind the Western attack on Libya is the vast oil reserves in the North African country.
Zio-Nazi Vice PM: Strike on Iran could be necessary
NOVANEWS
Zio-Nazi Vice Prime Minister and Strategic Affairs Minister Moshe Ya’alon says the civilized world must take joint action to avert the Iranian nuclear threat.
Zio-Nazi Vice Prime Minister and Strategic Affairs Minister Moshe Ya’alon says the civilized world must take joint action to avert the Iranian nuclear threat, including a pre-emptive strike if necessary.
The former Zio-Nazi Defense Forces chief of staff made the statement Monday in an interview with Russia’s Interfax news agency ahead of a visit to Moscow.
Ya’alon wouldn’t discuss who might deal the strike, saying the entire world, not just the Zio-Nazi regime, must be concerned about the danger posed by a nuclear-armed Iran.
Ya’alon’s spokesman Ofer Harel told The Associated Press later Monday that the minister was repeating Zio-Nazi position that all options are on the table and not calling for anybody to attack Iran.
Iran has insisted its nuclear program is peaceful, but the U.S., Zio-Nazi regime and many others believe it is cover for developing atomic weapons.
Iran flatly denied this claim recently, with Iran’s nuclear envoy saying it would be a “strategic mistake” to build atom bombs.
Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran’s ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), also insisted during a public debate that sanctions and the Stuxnet computer virus had failed to slow the Islamic Republic’s disputed nuclear program.
“Please be assured that none of the sanctions have affected our nuclear activities … 100 percent sure,” he said.
Western analysts say increasingly tough sanctions on Iran as well as Stuxnet and possible other sabotage have delayed Iran’s nuclear progress, even though they say the country now has enough low-enriched uranium for two bombs if refined more.
US dropped cluster bombs on Misratah’
NOVANEWS

A Human rights investigation in Libya has found that it was the US and its Western allies who cluster bombed the troubled city of Misratah back in April.
The HRI said it has convincing evidence that the cluster bombing blamed on pro-Gaddafi forces was actually carried out by the US navy.
The report says at the time of the attack, Human Rights Watch and a reporter working for US media immediately blamed forces loyal to Libya’s embattled leader Muammar Gaddafi for the cluster bombing that threatened civilian lives.
According to the report, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay and the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were quick to condemn the act.
Clinton called the cluster bombing of urban areas an act that posed a lot of challenges to both NATO and the opposition.
International aid agencies and human rights groups had warned of a growing humanitarian disaster in Misratah, Libya’s third largest city.
“We never saw these injuries before. We need experts to assess [the munitions],” said a doctor at a Misratah hospital back in mid-April.
The Libyan regime had flatly denied reports that they have used internationally banned cluster bombs in the ongoing clashes with revolutionaries.
NATO has been bombing Libya since March. Under a UN mandate, the alliance must protect civilians caught up in the battle between the opponents of Gaddafi and his loyalists.
However, many civilians and even anti-Gaddafi forces have been killed since the Western-led war on Libya began in March. Cluster bombs used by coalition forces in Afghanistan and Iraq have also resulted in civilian casualties.
Critics, however, accuse the West of hypocrisy over the offensive on Libya, along with its silence towards the brutal crackdowns on similar anti-regime movements elsewhere in the Arab world, such as in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
Experts say the main motive behind the Western attack on Libya is the vast oil reserves in the North African country.
Ministers support bill exempting prime ministers from investigation
NOVANEWS
Kadima MK Zionist Ronit Tirosh is proposing a law that would restrict police’s ability to investigate a sitting prime minister for suspicion of crimes committed before entering office.
Haaretz
The government voted Sunday to support a bill that would prevent police from investigating a serving prime minister for suspected wrongdoings committed before assuming the position of prime minister.
All of the ministers present, including Justice Minister Yaakov Neeman, supported the bill. The ministers agreed that the bill would only be advanced in the Knesset with the coordination of the Justice Ministry.
If the bill is passed by the Knesset, it would not affect Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his current term, but would only take effect after the next round of Knesset elections are held. The bill would not apply to serious crimes such as rape and murder.
Kadima MK Ronit Tirosh, who proposed the bill, said , “I commend the government for approving the law. This is an earthquake in the nature of governance in Israel, which will strengthen the next prime minister, and consequently the governance in Israel in general.”
Labor MK Shelly Yachimovich protested the government’s decision to support the bill. “The decision by the Ministerial Committee to support the law that would rule out investigations of a sitting prime minister is a miserable decision that damages the foundations of equality before the law,” said Yachimovich.
“This decision gives a green light to politicians to commit acts of corruption and be protected from investigation. The integrity of public officials is a basic condition of their position, and not only are they not immune from the law, but they must be examples of respecting the law,” added Yachimovich.
“The decision undermines this important principle of democracy,” she said.
Claims of a political witch-hunt
That the new bill was proposed by a member of the Kadima party did not arouse surprise, as Ariel Sharon and Ehud Olmert, two prime ministers that served as members of Kadima, were under investigation by police for extensive periods of time during their respective terms in office.
Those investigations drew a great deal of those prime ministers’ attention and time, as they could not wholly deal with state affairs and focus on their ongoing investigations at the same time.
Some of those investigations eventually ended with the closing of the file and no charges being files against the prime minister, and it had been claimed numerous times that the investigations were instigated as unnecessary political witch-hunts meant to impede the prime minister and make his job more difficult.
Another problem concerning the investigation of sitting prime ministers arose when opponents of the Gaza Disengagement contended that Prime Minister Sharon proposed the controversial and unprecedented plan only in order to draw the public’s attention away from ongoing investigations of his own activities.
Some of the cases against Sharon are still pending, though he lies in a coma. Olmert has since been indicted in three separate corruption affairs, and his trial is currently ongoing.
‘Iran denies passage to Merkel’s plane’
NOVANEWS

The new Airbus A340-300 of the German government is waiting at Berlin’s Tegel airport, May 30, 2011.
The German government says Iran has refused to give permission to the plane carrying German Chancellor Angela Merkel to fly over the country, a report says.
Merkel’s plane was forced to circle over Turkey for about two hours on Tuesday before it touched down in New Delhi, India, as it was not allowed access to Iran’s airspace, Germany’s Deutsche Welle news agency reported.
After an hour of negotiations mediated by Turkey, Tehran granted the German chancellor’s plane permission to cross. Had the dispute continued any longer, the Airbus 340 carrying Merkel would have been forced to stop in Turkey for refueling.
A second German plane with four German government ministers onboard flew over the country without a problem and landed on time in New Delhi.
Tehran has yet to comment on the reports.
The German Foreign Ministry said it summoned the Iranian ambassador for explanation.
“It is absolutely unacceptable that Iran should hold up the German chancellor’s journey,” Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said.
The reports come as Tehran says several airports in Germany and other European countries have refused to refuel passenger planes from Iran.
The European Union, under pressure from the United States, has been taking unilateral measures — on the top of a UN Security Council’s fourth round of sanctions in 2010 — against Iran to dissuade it from continuing its nuclear program.
Tehran maintains that as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, it reserves the right to peaceful nuclear energy and technology.
Freezing assets belonging to Iranian companies and officials and their associates are part of the West’s mounting restrictions to target the country, especially in its energy sector.
The UN Security Council’s sanctions resolution against Iran does not block access to petroleum products like gasoline and jet fuel.
Who in the Middle East Cares What Obama Says?
NOVANEWS
By Robert Fisk
May 30, 2011 “The Independent” — This month, in the Middle East, has seen the unmaking of the President of the United States. More than that, it has witnessed the lowest prestige of America in the region since Roosevelt met King Abdul Aziz on the USS Quincy in the Great Bitter Lake in 1945.
While Barack Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu played out their farce in Washington – Obama grovelling as usual – the Arabs got on with the serious business of changing their world, demonstrating and fighting and dying for freedoms they have never possessed. Obama waffled on about change in the Middle East – and about America’s new role in the region. It was pathetic. “What is this ‘role’ thing?” an Egyptian friend asked me at the weekend. “Do they still believe we care about what they think?”
And it is true. Obama’s failure to support the Arab revolutions until they were all but over lost the US most of its surviving credit in the region. Obama was silent on the overthrow of Ben Ali, only joined in the chorus of contempt for Mubarak two days before his flight, condemned the Syrian regime – which has killed more of its people than any other dynasty in this Arab “spring”, save for the frightful Gaddafi – but makes it clear that he would be happy to see Assad survive, waves his puny fist at puny Bahrain’s cruelty and remains absolutely, stunningly silent over Saudi Arabia. And he goes on his knees before Israel. Is it any wonder, then, that Arabs are turning their backs on America, not out of fury or anger, nor with threats or violence, but with contempt? It is the Arabs and their fellow Muslims of the Middle East who are themselves now making the decisions.
Turkey is furious with Assad because he twice promised to speak of reform and democratic elections – and then failed to honour his word. The Turkish government has twice flown delegations to Damascus and, according to the Turks, Assad lied to the foreign minister on the second visit, baldly insisting that he would recall his brother Maher’s legions from the streets of Syrian cities. He failed to do so. The torturers continue their work.
Watching the hundreds of refugees pouring from Syria across the northern border of Lebanon, the Turkish government is now so fearful of a repeat of the great mass Iraqi Kurdish refugee tide that overwhelmed their border in the aftermath of the 1991 Gulf war that it has drawn up its own secret plans to prevent the Kurds of Syria moving in their thousands into the Kurdish areas of south-eastern Turkey. Turkish generals have thus prepared an operation that would send several battalions of Turkish troops into Syria itself to carve out a “safe area” for Syrian refugees inside Assad’s caliphate. The Turks are prepared to advance well beyond the Syrian border town of Al Qamishli – perhaps half way to Deir el-Zour (the old desert killing fields of the 1915 Armenian Holocaust, though speak it not) – to provide a “safe haven” for those fleeing the slaughter in Syria’s cities.
The Qataris are meanwhile trying to prevent Algeria from resupplying Gaddafi with tanks and armoured vehicles – this was one of the reasons why the Emir of Qatar, the wisest bird in the Arabian Gulf, visited the Algerian president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, last week. Qatar is committed to the Libyan rebels in Benghazi; its planes are flying over Libya from Crete and – undisclosed until now – it has Qatari officers advising the rebels inside the city of Misrata in western Libya; but if Algerian armour is indeed being handed over to Gaddafi to replace the material that has been destroyed in air strikes, it would account for the ridiculously slow progress which the Nato campaign is making against Gaddafi.
Of course, it all depends on whether Bouteflika really controls his army – or whether the Algerian “pouvoir”, which includes plenty of secretive and corrupt generals, are doing the deals. Algerian equipment is superior to Gaddafi’s and thus for every tank he loses, Ghaddafi might be getting an improved model to replace it. Below Tunisia, Algeria and Libya share a 750-mile desert frontier, an easy access route for weapons to pass across the border.
But the Qataris are also attracting Assad’s venom. Al Jazeera’s concentration on the Syrian uprising – its graphic images of the dead and wounded far more devastating than anything our soft western television news shows would dare broadcast – has Syrian state television nightly spitting at the Emir and at the state of Qatar. The Syrian government has now suspended up to £4 billion of Qatari investment projects, including one belonging to the Qatar Electricity and Water Company.
Amid all these vast and epic events – Yemen itself may yet prove to be the biggest bloodbath of all, while the number of Syria’s “martyrs” have now exceeded the victims of Mubarak’s death squads five months ago – is it any surprise that the frolics of Messrs Netanyahu and Obama appear so irrelevant? Indeed, Obama’s policy towards the Middle East – whatever it is – sometimes appears so muddled that it is scarcely worthy of study. He supports, of course, democracy – then admits that this may conflict with America’s interests. In that wonderful democracy called Saudi Arabia, the US is now pushing ahead with a £40 billion arms deal and helping the Saudis to develop a new “elite” force to protect the kingdom’s oil and future nuclear sites. Hence Obama’s fear of upsetting Saudi Arabia, two of whose three leading brothers are now so incapacitated that they can no longer make sane decisions – unfortunately, one of these two happens to be King Abdullah – and his willingness to allow the Assad family’s atrocity-prone regime to survive. Of course, the Israelis would far prefer the “stability” of the Syrian dictatorship to continue; better the dark caliphate you know than the hateful Islamists who might emerge from the ruins. But is this argument really good enough for Obama to support when the people of Syria are dying in the streets for the kind of democracy that the US president says he wants to see in the region?
One of the vainest elements of American foreign policy towards the Middle East is the foundational idea that the Arabs are somehow more stupid than the rest of us, certainly than the Israelis, more out of touch with reality than the West, that they don’t understand their own history. Thus they have to be preached at, lectured, and cajoled by La Clinton and her ilk – much as their dictators did and do, father figures guiding their children through life. But Arabs are far more literate than they were a generation ago; millions speak perfect English and can understand all too well the political weakness and irrelevance in the president’s words. Listening to Obama’s 45-minute speech this month – the “kick off’ to four whole days of weasel words and puffery by the man who tried to reach out to the Muslim world in Cairo two years ago, and then did nothing – one might have thought that the American President had initiated the Arab revolts, rather than sat on the sidelines in fear.
There was an interesting linguistic collapse in the president’s language over those critical four days. On Thursday 19 May, he referred to the continuation of Israeli “settlements”. A day later, Netanyahu was lecturing him on “certain demographic changes that have taken place on the ground”. Then when Obama addressed the American Aipac lobby group (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) on the Sunday, he had cravenly adopted Netanyahu’s own preposterous expression. Now he, too, spoke of “new demographic realities on the ground.” Who would believe that he was talking about internationally illegal Jewish colonies built on land stolen from Arabs in one of the biggest property heists in the history of “Palestine”? Delay in peace-making will undermine Israeli security, Obama announced – apparently unaware that Netanyahu’s project is to go on delaying and delaying and delaying until there is no land left for the “viable” Palestinian state which the United States and the European Union supposedly wish to see.
Then we had the endless waffle about the 1967 borders. Netanyahu called them “defenceless” (though they seemed to have been pretty defendable for the 18 years prior to the Six Day War) and Obama – oblivious to the fact that Israel must be the only country in the world to have an eastern land frontier but doesn’t know where it is – then says he was misunderstood when he talked about 1967. It doesn’t matter what he says. George W Bush caved in years ago when he gave Ariel Sharon a letter which stated America’s acceptance of “already existing major Israeli population centres” beyond the 1967 lines. To those Arabs prepared to listen to Obama’s spineless oration, this was a grovel too far. They simply could not understand the reaction of Netanyahu’s address to Congress. How could American politicians rise and applaud Netanyahu 55 times – 55 times – with more enthusiasm than one of the rubber parliaments of Assad, Saleh and the rest?
And what on earth did the Great Speechifier mean when he said that “every country has the right to self-defence” but that Palestine would be “demilitarised”? What he meant was that Israel could go on attacking the Palestinians (as in 2009, for example, when Obama was treacherously silent) while the Palestinians would have to take what was coming to them if they did not behave according to the rules – because they would have no weapons to defend themselves. As for Netanyahu, the Palestinians must choose between unity with Hamas or peace with Israel. All of which was very odd. When there was no unity, Netanyahu told us all that he had no Palestinian interlocutor because the Palestinians were disunited. Yet when they unite, they are disqualified from peace talks.
Of course, cynicism grows the longer you live in the Middle East. I recall, for example, travelling to Gaza in the early 1980s when Yasser Arafat was running his PLO statelet in Beirut. Anxious to destroy Arafat’s prestige in the occupied territories, the Israeli government decided to give its support to an Islamist group in Gaza called Hamas. In fact, I actually saw with my own eyes the head of the Israeli army’s Southern Command negotiating with bearded Hamas officials, giving them permission to build more mosques. It’s only fair to say, of course, that we were also busy at the time, encouraging a certain Osama bin Laden to fight the Soviet army in Afghanistan. But the Israelis did not give up on Hamas. They later held another meeting with the organisation in the West Bank; the story was on the front page of the Jerusalem Post the next day. But there wasn’t a whimper from the Americans.
Then another moment that I can recall over the long years. Hamas and Islamic Jihad members – all Palestinians – were, in the early 1990s, thrown across the Israeli border into southern Lebanon where they spent more than a year camping on a freezing mountainside. I would visit them from time to time and on one occasion mentioned that I would be travelling to Israel next day. Immediately, one of the Hamas men ran to his tent and returned with a notebook. He then proceeded to give me the home telephone numbers of three senior Israeli politicians – two of whom are still prominent today – and, when I reached Jerusalem and called the numbers, they all turned out to be correct. In other words, the Israeli government had been in personal and direct contact with Hamas.
But now the narrative has been twisted out of all recognition. Hamas are the super-terrorists, the “al-Qa’ida” representatives in the unified Palestinian leadership, the men of evil who will ensure that no peace ever takes place between Palestinians and Israeli. If only this were true, the real al-Qa’ida would be more than happy to take responsibility. But it is not true. In the same context, Obama stated that the Palestinians would have to answer questions about Hamas. But why should they? What Obama and Netanyahu think about Hamas is now irrelevant to them. Obama warns the Palestinians not to ask for statehood at the United Nations in September. But why on earth not? If the people of Egypt and Tunisia and Yemen and Libya and Syria – we are all waiting for the next revolution (Jordan? Bahrain again? Morocco?) – can fight for freedom and dignity, why shouldn’t the Palestinians? Lectured for decades on the need for non-violent protest, the Palestinians elect to go to the UN with their cry for legitimacy – only to be slapped down by Obama.
Having read all of the “Palestine Papers” which Al-Jazeera revealed, there is no doubt that “Palestine’s” official negotiators will go to any lengths to produce some kind of statelet. Mahmoud Abbas, who managed to write a 600-page book on the “peace process” without once mentioning the word “occupation”, could even cave in over the UN project, fearful of Obama’s warning that it would be an attempt to “isolate” Israel and thus de-legitimise the Israeli state – or “the Jewish state” as the US president now calls it. But Netanyahu is doing more than anyone to delegitimise his own state; indeed, he is looking more and more like the Arab buffoons who have hitherto littered the Middle East. Mubarak saw a “foreign hand” in the Egyptian revolution (Iran, of course). So did the Crown Prince of Bahrain (Iran again). So did Gaddafi (al-Qa’ida, western imperialism, you name it), So did Saleh of Yemen (al-Qa’ida, Mossad and America). So did Assad of Syria (Islamism, probably Mossad, etc). And so does Netanyahu (Iran, naturally enough, Syria, Lebanon, just about anyone you can think of except for Israel itself).
But as this nonsense continues, so the tectonic plates shudder. I doubt very much if the Palestinians will remain silent. If there’s an “intifada” in Syria, why not a Third Intifada in “Palestine”? Not a struggle of suicide bombers but of mass, million-strong protests. If the Israelis have to shoot down a mere few hundred demonstrators who tried – and in some cases succeeded – in crossing the Israeli border almost two weeks ago, what will they do if confronted by thousands or a million. Obama says no Palestinian state must be declared at the UN. But why not? Who cares in the Middle East what Obama says? Not even, it seems, the Israelis. The Arab spring will soon become a hot summer and there will be an Arab autumn, too. By then, the Middle East may have changed forever. What America says will matter nothing.
