OASIS Academy – pupils and staff resist sackings

Academy chain OASIS have announced that 13 teachers are to be sacked at their MediaCity academy in Salford.
On Tuesday pupils protested at the school gates and inside the school.
On Thursday the NUT announced that its members have voted to strike against the sackings. They are now awaiting a meeting with OASIS.
One of the arguments used by academy supporters it that they have more money and they can protect jobs and resources. OASIS MediaCity, and other academies making cuts, prove it is a lie.

New Briefing – Why you should say no to ‘Free’ schools

This Briefing argues why you should say no to ‘free schools:

  • Because they take pupils and money from existing schools.

  • Because they increase social segregation.

  • Because they aren’t the answer to raising standards.

  • Because they will be run by business for profit.

  • Because they threaten pay, working conditions and union rights.

  • Because they are not democratically accountable.

Academy summary data to November 2011

There are now 1,419 Academies open in England. 69 more opened in the last month and 74 more applied. 58% of Secondary schools have not applied. 3% or Primary schools are Academies.
32 more primary schools became Academies in the last month. At this rate it will take Michael Gove 473 months to convert them all into Academies – 39 years. This shows that while the only press coverage is about how well the Academies program is going, in reality Michael Gove faces huge resistance.

Schools Rejecting Academies

Otley Prince Henry’s school to strike for 6 days against academy plan

The school governing body voted on October 11th to proceed to academy conversion from December 1st. During the consultation period the school convened two very well-attended public meetings. At both meetings votes were held and opposition to academy status was almost unanimous (71 against and 2 for at the second meeting). A survey of all staff carried out by the school showed that around two thirds were opposed. The governing body have been split down the middle and since the decision to convert nine governors have resigned in protest at the decision.
